First he was charged. Then the charge against him was downgraded. A new prosecution team took over and dropped the charge altogether to gather more evidence. It ultimately decided to present the case to a grand jury, and he was charged again. Here are some of the twists and turns along the way: It was more than a year after the fatal ********* of Halyna Hutchins, the “Rust” cinematographer, that New Mexico prosecutors first announced that Mr. Baldwin would be charged with involuntary manslaughter, stunning much of Hollywood and Mr. Baldwin and his legal team. The charge against Mr. Baldwin was downgraded after prosecutors acknowledged that it was based on a law that did not exist at the time of the *********. (A mandatory five-year prison sentence for a conviction was replaced with a maximum sentence of 18 months.) Then, the special prosecutor handling the case stepped down after Mr. Baldwin’s lawyers argued that her appointment violated the State Constitution because she also served in another branch of government as a state lawmaker. An email later surfaced in which the special prosecutor, Andrea Reeb, suggested to the district attorney who hired her that a public disclosure of her role “might help in my campaign lol.” A new prosecution team took over. After lawyers for Mr. Baldwin argued that the **** might have been modified in such a way that made it more likely to discharge without pulling the trigger, the new prosecution team dismissed the charge against Mr. Baldwin to test the **** further. But it did not rule out filing a new case. A forensic expert hired by the prosecution concluded that the trigger must have been pulled for the **** to *****, a contention that Mr. Baldwin’s lawyers still dispute. After the potential for a plea deal fell apart, the new prosecution team, led by Kari T. Morrissey, decided to take the case to a grand jury. The grand jury indicted Mr. Baldwin on an involuntary manslaughter charge in January.
