Work on I-5 starting this week will bring more lane closures, traffic backups

Road work is scheduled at both ends of I-5 in Thurston County, and another day of 10-mile backups and hours-long delays is expected next week.

First, there will be overnight work from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday, July 8-9, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

A two-mile section of northbound I-5 between the Lewis-Thurston county line and Exit 88 in Grand Mound will be reduced to one lane during nighttime work. Exit 88 from northbound I-5 to US-12 will be closed, as well as the ramp from US-12 to northbound I-5.

The following two days, Wednesday and Thursday, July 10-11, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., the same two-mile section on the southbound side will be reduced to one lane. Exit 88 from southbound I-5 to US-12 will be closed, as well as the ramp from US-12 to southbound I-5.

Then this coming weekend, from Friday to Sunday, July 12-14, the two right lanes of northbound I-5 approaching Exit 114 to Nisqually will be closed for road work.

According to WSDOT, crews will be working from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday, then again from 10 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

WSDOT urges travelers to consider postponing discretionary trips or expect delays in the area. Add extra travel time to your destination on Sunday morning, particularly, if travel is necessary.

There may not be crews out on Sunday because concrete will be curing.

Lastly, a two-mile section of northbound I-5 between the Lewis-Thurston county line and Exit 88 in Grand Mound will be reduced to one lane from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16. The closures are expected to create 10-mile traffic backups and delays similar to those seen a few weeks ago.

This closure will allow crews to finish filling gaps in the road surface and fix potholes. All work is weather dependent and could be rescheduled.
