1 Part of Overwatch was Inspired by the Most Unlikely of Sources, Dev Confirms

Have you ever wondered what makes landing a shot in Overwatch so satisfying? Sure, the visual feedback is great, but it’s the audio cue that really drives home the feeling of a job well done. That distinctive “pip” sound has become an iconic part of the beloved hero-shooter experience, but its origins might surprise you.

As it turns out, the sound that’s been giving players an adrenaline rush for years now was inspired by something completely unrelated to gaming. In fact, it’s a sound that many are intimately familiar with, even if they’ve never set foot on a virtual battlefield.

How a ***** Bottle Became Overwatch’s Most Iconic Sound

The revelation comes from the Overwatch Collector’s Edition Source Book, where Sound Design Supervisor Paul Lackey shared the story behind the game’****** detection sound.

According to Lackey, the team went through several iterations trying to find the perfect sound that would cut through the mix without being too obtrusive or sounding like it belonged to any specific hero:

That’s right the satisfying “pip” that players have come to know, and love is actually the sound of a ***** bottle being opened, reversed, and tweaked ever so slightly. It’s just another example of the creativity of the sound design team at Blizzard, as they were able to turn something so mundane into an integral part of the Overwatch experience.

On that note, though, some players have even suggested taking the ***** bottle inspiration a step further:

While that might be a bit too on-the-nose, it’s clear that the ***** bottle sound has struck a chord with players.

While most players have embraced the ***** bottle-inspired hit sound, some have questioned the logic behind using a reversed sound effect.

After all, if the original sound is that of a bottle being opened, doesn’t the reversed version technically represent a bottle being closed?

Other players got all nostalgic and expressed a ******* for more customization options when it comes to hit sounds, similar to what’s available in Team Fortress 2:

Interestingly, despite this comment being made over 8 years ago, Overwatch 2 still doesn’t offer any customization options for hit sounds. It seems that Blizzard is content with the ***** bottle-inspired sound and has no plans to allow players to change it anytime soon!

As the game continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see if the sound design team at Blizzard can come up with any more unexpected sources of inspiration. In the meantime, we’ll just have to keep our ears open and our ***** bottles at the ready.

What do you think about the origins of Overwatch‘****** detection sound? Does knowing that it’s a reversed ***** bottle opening change how you feel about landing shots in the game? Let us know in the comments below!
