Claremont product Joe Fonti to make GWS debut in massive test against Carlton

Another West Aussie is set to make his mark in the AFL with GWS handing Claremont product Joe Fonti a debut against Carlton this weekend.

The former midfielder-turned-defender was picked up by the Giants with pick No.44 in last year’s draft and will face a massive challenge in trying to stop the in-form Blues’ powerful forward line.

But the ex-Tiger has shown solid form in the VFL averaging more than 16 disposals per game and using his run to be a launching pad out of defence for the Giants VFL’s side.

“It’s a little bit nerve-wracking but definitely exciting,” Fonti said following the news.

“I didn’t think it would come this early, but I’ve been playing some alright footy in the VFL and that’s been noticed and I’ve been rewarded with this opportunity.”

Having only made the switch to defence in the lead-up to last year’s draft, Fonti said his development as a backmen has been accelerated under the guise of the Giants’ star defenders.

“You learn the system and then when that becomes second nature you can then sort of start focusing on your own game and build confidence off the back of that and that’s what I’ve tried to do.

“As far as players, I’ve taken a lot out of Lachie Ash and Lachie Whitfield’s game, I try to model my game off those two.

“Even Harry Perryman and Connor Idun’s one-on-one work defensively. When I first came to the club that was a big work on for me so certainly try to take a leaf out of their book.”

Cousin to AFLW star Ella Roberts, Fonti is the third WA debutant in the past fortnight following Lawson Humphries’ (Geelong) and Jacob Blight’s (Richmond) debut in round 16.

He comes in place of Ash (cork) as the Giants look to avoid a third straight loss as they try to ****** their way back into the top eight.
