The developers at Saber Interactive know that meeting everyone’s expectations won’t be a walk in the park. In a recent interview, Lead Game Designer Dmitry Grigorenko revealed how the team was committed to delivering a game that would please fans in all aspects—including the return of a very important game mode. They wanted to make “the perfect sequel,” which meant every feature from the first game had to make it to the second. That includes the PvP mode. Fans of the original title would never forgive us if we didn’t have PvP here again. We simply couldn’t cut features for the Space Marine sequel, no matter what. It won’t be the same, but an improved version instead. The new PvP mode has six classes instead of three, and each class has a signature ability, which encourages players to coordinate and try different classes. There’s also the three-player co-op mode with a unique cosmetic progression that we’ve discussed earlier. Grigorenko explains he wanted to give players the feel of an “all-out war happening all around you.” Titus can’t be everywhere at once. Even though he is demoted to lieutenant now, he still needs a squad. That’s how the idea of Operations mode was born. Through the Operations mode, you’ll be able to experience the game with a few friends or strangers, or even A.I. players if you’d rather play alone. The choice is yours. Grigorenko On Designing The Different Game Modes Space Marine 2 will have a ton of replayability, according to Saber. | Credit: Saber Interactive Developing the PvP mode and the campaign mode for Space Marine 2 was a very different affair. Grigorenko explains that the PvP modes needed to be highly replayable. Players will play the story campaign once, maybe twice. They will be very happy and move on. With PvP, it is very important to keep it fresh. Replayability will work differently depending on the mode too. With the PvP mode, it comes from how you’ll be playing against different people with different map modes. In operations mode, it’s “much more complicated.” Grigorenko mentions that this is why the team has included as many procedural elements as they can. Procedural generation is a slippery slope to walk on. Poorly done, these elements can become an empty mess that serves no purpose other than artificially adding ‘content’ to complete. If it’s done well, there’s nothing to complain about. What is your opinion on Saber Interactive’s approach to making Space Marine 2? Is there anything you would want to change?
