Biden’s New Asylum Policy Amid Election Pressures

The moral obligation to shelter those escaping turmoil in their homeland is deeply woven into the fabric of America’s identity. For decades, the nation has stood as a beacon of hope, symbolized by the iconic Statue of Liberty. Yet, counter-posed to this ethos, ***** the rightful prerogative of America to manage its borders, and its rightful role in deciding who may come here and under what conditions. This deeply held principle might be described as ‘Fortress America,’ a kind of circling of the wagons to defend the country. Biden tried to find some midway point between these two symbolic characterizations of America by introducing his executive agenda of cutbacks on asylum to alleviate the strain on the country’s resources while trying to fortify its security measures.

The question is how his executive order will influence voters in the Presidential election in November?

Pew Study Shows Views

A Pew Research Center

published on February 15th, 2024 reported that 80 percent of those surveyed said the U.S. government was doing a bad job handling the migrant influx. According to the study, those interviewed believed the main factors driving the migrants northwards were good economic opportunities in the U.S., ********* in their home countries and the belief that U.S. immigration would make it easy to stay. While the political parties disagree on many of the issues surrounding immigration, most believe boosting resources for quicker decisions on asylum cases would improve the situation at the ******** border, more legal immigration options would make the border situation better, and economic and security concerns dominate the negative views of respondents towards migrants.

that have indicated that many voters are dissatisfied with his handling of border security, with immigration ranked as a top issue. Effective June 5th, 2024, the Biden Administration prohibited entry into the U.S. of any noncitizens attempting to cross any portion of the southern border without going through a designated port of entry. In the proclamation, Biden explained that the federal government does not have enough resources from Congress to manage the flow of people into the country across the southern border. Shortly after his announcement, since the daily number of irregular border crossings was surpassing 2,500 individuals, the border was closed.

The presidential proclamation is supposed to remain in effect until 14 calendar days after the Department of Homeland Security makes a determination that there has been a seven-consecutive-calendar-day average of fewer than 1,500 attempts to enter the U.S. without valid documentation through a designated port of entry. That is likely going to be far into the future. However, the ********* Civil Liberties Association has filed suit to block the order and there almost certainly will be multiple other lawsuits filed against the administration so it is possible that a federal court may put a halt to it.

******** President To Support Biden’s Asylum Policy

Unfortunately, Biden’s actions are not a complete fix to the border problem. Numerous questions arise. Where are the over 2500 migrants per day coming to the U.S. border going to stay if they cannot enter the U.S.? How long will Mexico be able to absorb the backup of thousands of migrants looking for U.S. entry? What will the recent election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the next President of Mexico mean in this area? Her promise to continue the policies of her predecessor López Obrador supporting America’s effort to limit unauthorized immigration to the USA, appears to be heading Mexico into more of an ********* immigrant transit pre-clearing policing country. What will be the impact on Mexico’s democratic status if she turns to the army to take more responsibility for controlling the flow of migrants headed northward?

There are other questions. How are we to deal with the removal of migrants when there are many countries that simply refuse to accept the return of their citizens being deported from America? According to an

published by the Migration Policy Institute, “The ******* States has long taken an assertive approach. As of mid-2020, it considered 13 countries and territories recalcitrant: Bhutan, Burundi, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Eritrea, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Laos, Pakistan, and Russia.” The article added, “ Varying degrees of visa sanctions were as of this writing in effect for eight countries: Cambodia, China, Cuba, Eritrea, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Sierra Leone. In previous years, the ******* States has imposed visa penalties against Burundi, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, and Guyana.”

Still, other questions remain unanswered. Why should migrants accept abject ********, hopelessness, and ********* in their home countries? Is America doing enough to help ****** ********* countries resolve the migrant problem? Clearly returning migrants to their home countries is not as straightforward as it may appear.

The southern border problem defies swift resolution. Sustainable progress requires bipartisan legislative reforms addressing root causes, bolstering border infrastructure, and carving pathways to legal status for undocumented immigrants—a program only Congress can implement. Still, Biden was right to do something. He will argue that the Republicans turned down immigration reform when it was offered to them in Congress so this was all he could do. It will be up to the ********* electorate to decide whether this was enough or whether they would prefer tougher measures proposed by Trump.
