‘Curtain of *****’: Iceland volcano forces evacuation

A volcano in southwestern Iceland has erupted, sending glowing hot lava ********* 50 metres (164ft) into the air.

It’s the fifth eruption since December on the Reykjanes peninsula, near the country’s capital Reykjavik.

The Blue Lagoon spa – one of the country’s most popular tourist resorts – was evacuated as a precaution.

Rikke Pedersen of Iceland University’s Nordic Volcanology Center, described the lava as a curtain of ***** that was approximately 2.5km (1.5 miles) in length.

The country’s Met Office said the fissure appeared to be “growing”. The eruption occurred at around 12:00 local time (11:00 BST).
