Baldur’s Gate 3’s Swen Vincke and Larian Studios had 1 Huge ***** that Threatened to Derail the Development

Baldur’s Gate 3 showed so much promise before its full release, and people saw its potential for what it is. When the game got a proper full release, the hard work that Larian put into the game was seen.

It grew to unimaginable heights, backed by a loyal and booming fanbase. Before all that, however, the game went through a stressful development *******. For the staff at Larian, their problem was rooted in a very human emotion: *****.

Developing Baldur’s Gate 3 was no easy feat.

In an interview with

, Swen Vincke, Larian’s CEO, and Adam Smith, the writing director, spilled the beans on some very real emotional turbulence they experienced while working on the studio’s latest release.

When asked if they thought their game would ***** up to be this popular, Vincke explained that at the root of it all, they “just tried to make a good game.” However, there was a thought that stayed with the team:

Our biggest *****, actually, was that we were gonna ****** up, because this was Baldur’s Gate 3. There were so many emotional investments by so many people in this series and so much pressure on it.

Smith revealed that he was a fan of Larian’s work before joining the company, and said he thought Divinity: Original Sin 2 would be their magnum opus. He feared he joined the company at the wrong time when it would be on a downward curve.

As Baldur’s Gate 3 grew closer to launch, Smith’s ***** grew in parallel. It was obvious to anyone that the project was close to being brilliant but was still a work in progress. Smith jokes:

I mean, there were times when we looked at it and we thought: it’s terrible. [Laughs]

Even with early access feedback, there were a lot of factors that could go wrong. Like a domino effect, one thing malfunctioning could break more things. It was even more important to be vigilant then; what’s the point in having a mind-blowing quest if it crashes or bugs out constantly?

Vincke gets vulnerable and relatable during the interview.

No matter the project, small or big, there’s bound to be some second-guessing and self-doubt involved, as is with any sort of artistic expression. Vincke explains some of his thought processes during development:

I was running the game in my head continuously and convincing myself: “It’s not that, it’s not that…” I’m not joking.”

He further added:

Every single morning, every single evening, that was the thing that was going through my head and I was literally playing it from beginning to end.

He also said that one of his biggest fears was that people wouldn’t be able to connect or empathize with the game. If that didn’t happen, it would’ve been “all for nothing,” as he puts it.

Looking at the reception the game has had since its release, there’s no doubt that Vincke successfully did what he set out to accomplish.
