Why Hidetaka Miyazaki is Absolutely ***** Wrong About Dark Souls 2

FromSoftware’s Dark Souls 2 was indeed a profitable game for the franchise as the game was well-received by the fanbase as well as the critics. Hidetaka Miyazaki, who served as the director of Dark Souls, chose to serve as a supervisor for the second game which was directed by Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura.

Although the game played a key role in building up the franchise, there were many issues that were reported at the time of its release. Miyazaki has stated in the past that Dark Souls 2 was very crucial for the franchise but lacked some important elements that ruined the overall gaming experience:

Indeed, Hidetaka Miyazaki was involved in Dark Souls 2 as a supervisor. However, he was more focused on Bloodborne at the time so obviously, the game was neglected during its production. Bloodborne won several awards and has been cited as a masterpiece and Dark Souls 2 had to be sacrificed for it.

Miyazaki probably realized the mistake and decided to serve as the director for Dark Souls 3, but it is to be noted that the third game never took elements from the second game. If Dark Souls 2 was so good and important for the studios, why did they decide to start fresh with Dark Souls 3?

Upon release, Dark Souls 2 was praised for its story, atmosphere, visuals, and environmental design. However, there were some issues that fans reported. Inconsistencies between levels and the lack of cohesive world-building were cited as the most obvious issues. Another problem in the game was the difficulty. Players were bombarded with enemies that completely ruined the gaming experience for gamers who prefer strategic play.

For some, the Adaptability Stat and Agility were useful but in most cases, fans complained that it made the game far more complex as compared to its predecessor. The game featured many bosses but many fans are unable to recall them today as there was nothing special about them. Without a doubt, Dark Souls 2‘s story was good but at some points, the game made the player feel disconnected from the main story. Finally, other gameplay problems, like the reduction of iframes were also talked about with respect to Dark Souls 2.

In an interview with

, Hidetaka Miyazaki explained how Dark Souls 2 played a key role in setting up the Dark Souls franchise,

“In regards to Dark Souls 2, I actually personally think this was a really great project for us, and I think without it, we wouldn’t have had a lot of the connections and a lot of the ideas that went forward and carried the rest of the series – There’s really no way of telling how or if the series would have continued the way it did without Dark Souls 2.”

There were issues with Dark Souls 2 but the game indeed helped in improving the franchise. One thing that fans miss about Dark Souls 2 is the Mage builds. The idea was perfectly ********* in the game as it felt skill-involved and less like a button-smash, something that was observed in other games.
