That Time Sicario 2 Director Nearly Gave Us a Henry Cavill Call of Duty Movie

It’s been more than twenty years, and Activision’s popular franchise, Call of Duty, has dropped players into numerous maps, warzones, and spaceships, creating intricate campaigns and fun multiplayer experiences that are now iconic in the genre. There’s no doubt that Call of Duty is one of the most popular video gaming franchises, and now the only thing remaining is its Hollywood debut.

It may be surprising, but Activsion Blizzard was planning a Call of Duty movie. The company was working on a live-action Call of Duty cinematic franchise, which was supposed to feature Henry Cavill. Unfortunately, Activsion Blizzard’s plans never came to fruition, and in 2020, it was confirmed that the movie’s production was halted due to internal reasons.

Back in 2015, Activsion (Now Activision Blizzard) revealed that a movie based on its iconic Call of Duty franchise was in the works and was supposed to be a part of the Call of Duty cinematic universe. Although we didn’t have a release date for the film, it was confirmed that Sicario 2’s director, Stefano Sollima, was involved in the project.

Initially, Sollima expressed interest in bringing names such as Tom Hardy and Chris Pine to lead the Call of Duty movie.

, the director revealed more about the film and confirmed that it wasn’t simply just another war movie; the project was a full-fledged soldier movie.

At one point, even Henry Calvin was rumored to play Captain Price in the Call of Duty movie. Fans were thrilled to see what such big names could do with one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world. However, in 2020, things took an unexpected turn, and Activsion-Blizzard abandoned the project.

There’s enormous potential in the Call of Duty franchise for a live-action adaptation. Activsion could’ve gone for a World War II epic or something more mysterious like a Cold War escape. Despite all this, Activsion decided to halt the game’s live-action adaptation, but why?

In 2020, Setfano,

Well, the Call of Duty film has remained a bit like this… We wrote the script with Scott Silver, and let’s say that the idea of expanding the universe, the world of Call of Duty… is no longer (at the moment) an industrial priority of the group, of Activision… So, trivially, it has stood still, which happens quite frequently there in America.

Given the franchise’s incredible success over the years, It’s unclear why the company didn’t prioritize the Call of Duty universe. It’s not like they abandoned their studio, as they collaborated with

to create Skylands Academy.

However, there’s still a chance that we might someday see a live adaptation of Call of Duty. In the last couple of years, we’ve seen tons of franchises such as The Last of Us, Mario Kart, and even Uncharted make their debut in Hollywood. Hopefully, the Activsion will do justice to the Call of Duty characters with a proper live-action movie/TV show in the future!
