PlayStation’s Unique Appointments for Jim Ryan’s Vacant Seat has Fans Frothing at the Mouth for the Future of the Dominant Platform

Ever since Jim Ryan stepped away from his position as the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation, many within the community have been wanting to know who the next person in the chair is going to be.

Well, Sony has announced that the position will now be split and divided among two: Herman Hulst as the CEO of the studios and Hideaki Nishino as the CEO of technology and platforms. The announcement, as one would expect, has a lot of people wondering where PlayStation is headed next and what the platform’s vision is going to look like.

Hermen Hulst will now lead the charge on Sony’s first-party outings.

With Jim Ryan’s departure as the CEO of SIE earlier this year, people began to wonder who’d end up as the next head of PlayStation and what the platform’s next few years will look like. Now, with the announcement of the dual CEO setup, reactions range from a mix of joy to hesitant curiosity.

Many will recall Herman Hulst teaming up with Hideo Kojima back in February to announce the latter’s upcoming action-espionage project, Physint. The guy has been quite popular within the community and his work on Killzone and Horizon series speaks for itself.

Many even compare him to Xbox’s Phil Spencer; that is before his reputation became somewhat tarnished. A lot of people are much more inquisitive about who Hideaki Nishino is.

Essentially, he’s been running Sony’s hardware side of things these past few years, with his most recent innovation being Sony’s PSVR2. Having worked with the company for nearly two and a half decades, there’s no better choice for the CEO of Platform Experience Group than him.

Under Ryan’s leadership, Sony saw the release of the PlayStation 5 amidst the pandemic.

One of the points of criticism directed towards Jim Ryan was his sudden attempt to steer PlayStation’s ship to more live-service titles in favor of the single-player narratives that made the platform the dominant force of the last two generations. With our new co-CEOs at the helm, though, we can somewhat deduce what’s next in line for Sony and PlayStation.

For example, Herman Hulst has recently brought PlayStation IPs across the prestige media of film and TV, with PlayStation Productions assisting in developing shows such as HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us. What this means is that, with Hulst as the CEO who’ll oversee SIE’s first-party content, one can easily expect PlayStation to bring an increase in more transmedia narratives.

Hideaki Nishino’s side is also quite interesting. For the past few years, PSVR, while brilliant in concept, has been struggling with its **********. Due to a severe lack of ports and titles, the headset has been put to the side in favor of the PS5‘s key outings.

With Nishino as the CEO, we may see Sony stepping into uncharted territory and bringing further innovation to VR and other areas of the platform. With that said, what are your thoughts on this dual-CEO setup? Where do you see PlayStation heading in the future? Let us know in the comments.,
