The Great Web Would Have Been the Biggest, Most Diverse and Fully Fledged Spider-Man Games Ever, So Why Did Insomniac and PlayStation Cancel It?

Insomniac Games suffered a very severe hack back in December of last year. A lot of very sensitive information was leaked to places like

or X. There was a particular project that caught attention: a multiplayer Spider-Man game.

This title for PlayStation was called Spider-Man: The Great Web, but the studio decided to cancel the project after even making some trailers and playable content. Among the leaked material is a PowerPoint presentation where all the features of the title were revealed, and fans are very disappointed about this cancellation.

Spider-Man: The Great Web it would have been a tremendous success for Insomniac Games and PlayStation

Live-service games are not an easy genre to invest in currently in the industry; there is an overpopulation of these titles, and only a chosen few can survive after the release momentum has passed. Even with giant games like Marvel or The Avengers, games just do not survive on this model with numerous concurrent players.

Marvel’s Avengers from Square Enix is the perfect example of one of these failures. Insomniac Games also has one of these projects in development but has decided to cancel it. The game was called Spider-Man: The Great Web.

This title was aiming to have much content available for years to come, with multiverse missions and variants of characters within the Spider-Verse.

first reported about this title back when Insomniac Games was hacked.

There is no official reason for the cancellation of this project; there is not even a specific release date, but apparently the title would have been set just after the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. This could have been an amazing idea, especially with the success of both Spider-Verse movies from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

The Insomniac Games cancelled title, Spider-Man: The Great Web has fans very sad

According to the information that leaked from Insomniac Games, there was a fully playable demo of Marvel’s Wolverine game, but the majority of the press did not share that work to respect the development team. Insomniac Games has not said anything about the cancelled Spider-Man: The Great Web game; fans are even forming a petition to bring this project back to life.

Insomniac Games launched Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 last year, which was very well received by fans and critics. The next game that this studio will release is Marvel’s Wolverine, which will probably be coming next year, as PlayStation confirmed that it will not be an AAA exclusive game from PlayStation Studios this year.

What are your thoughts about Spider-Man: The Great Web?
