[STEAM] Street Fighter movie’s new trailer is hokey and ridiculous, but that’s exactly what it needs to be

The fun movie news has been flowing out of CinemaCon all week, and one of the latest drops this morning is of particular interest to gamers.

The upcoming Street Fighter movie, due to release later this year on Oct. 16, got a new trailer this morning, and it's truly one to behold... for a variety of reasons. I'll leave you to watch it first and form your own opinion here:

So, yeah. It looks quite silly, but I don't think that's a bad thing by any stretch. If it took itself too seriously, it would probably come off as cringy, but if you embrace the cringe itself with lame dialogue and mediocre acting, then we may have a fun adaptation.

"Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury," the official synopsis says. "But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!"

The trailer is full of many callbacks to the games, like Ken beating up a car, along with Akuma and Ryu both powering up their fireballs. And how about Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson with that Balrog hairstyle? Yikes. But one of my favorite moments is when Cammy makes mention of Chun-Li's infamous thick thighs. "I don't see what the big deal is," she remarks, likely poking fun at fans who lost their ***** when Liang's portrayal and costume revealed she was wearing pants.

The big reveal at the end is a couple more stunning abominations: Jason Momoa's Blanka, which looks to be heavily CGI as opposed to more practical. And then, of course, we have WWE star Cody Rhodes' acting skills along with his god-awful (although accurate) Guile haircut. It's so bad it's great.

I'll likely see this movie in theaters just for the fun of it when it launches later this year, and I'll have fun, because I'm expecting it to be a silly, poorly acted mess. Anything else would be a pleasant surprise, but I do like a hokey shitshow almost as much as a good film.

I would hope, at least, that this version will be better than several previous disastrous attempts at bringing this iconic fighting game franchise to the silver screen. We shall see.
