Even Hidetaka Miyazaki Will Begrudgingly Admit What Ori and the ****** Forest Director Said about Dark Souls

It seems like mass layoffs aren’t the only trend in the current gaming landscape. In the last couple of years, we’ve seen more and more games come out in early access. This is an attempt by the developers to test a product and develop a fanbase before the game officially releases in a complete state. However, this model has led to some questionable ethics, with developers selling unfished games.

Still, the early access model has proven to be a major success for many popular titles such as ***** Cell, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Darkest Dungeon. Recently, Moon Studios came under ***** after players reported performance issues in their latest title, No Rest for the Wicked, which debuted in early access. However, the studio’s CEO has talked about the usefulness of the early access model and believes that even popular classics such as Dark Souls could’ve benefitted from it.

Data collected from the Early Access ******* is crucial, according to Moon Studios CEO | Steam

Early access releases are becoming quite popular, even for big games. Pocketpair’s Palworld is still an early-access title and has already become one of the year’s best-selling games. Even Baldur’s Gate 3, the GOTY of 2023, spent quite a few years in early access state.

While players have complained about the state of No Rest For The Wicked in its early access *******, Moon Studio’s CEO Thomas Mahler believes it’s the right thing to opt for. According to him, launching the game in early access was one of the studio’s best decisions. The data collected from the public is crucial for the game’s 1.0 release.

Mahler even believes classic titles such as the original Dark Souls would have benefited from being launched in an early access state. He claims that if FromSoftware had launched the game in early access, the developers working on the title would’ve had more time to polish the rushed late-game stages.

Some gamers might even remember that Dark Souls had plenty of broken bridges and doors, suggesting that more content could’ve been planned at the time. However, it wasn’t added because of the time constraints faced by the developers. If more time and feedback had been given, the developers would’ve been able to deliver a polished product.

The Moon Studios CEO calls for companies such as Sony and Nintendo to adopt this practice, allowing more AAA developers to polish their games before their eventual release.
