On February 28, Nintendo announced its plans to incorporate mobile phone integration into the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie, set to release on November 15, 2024, in theaters across the United States and Japan. According to Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director at Nintendo, “We want to create a more immersive experience for our fans, and bringing their phones into the theater is a key part of that.” The movie, produced in collaboration with Illumination Entertainment, is expected to bring in over $800 million in box office sales worldwide.

The phone integration will allow viewers to access exclusive content, including behind-the-scenes footage, character backstories, and interactive games, all synchronized with the movie’s timeline. This feature will be available through a dedicated app, which is currently in development and will be released sometime in October. When asked about the potential distractions this could cause, Miyamoto stated, “We’ve designed the experience to be complementary, not intrusive. Viewers will have the option to engage with their phones or simply enjoy the movie.”

As part of the promotional campaign, Nintendo has partnered with major theater chains, such as AMC and Regal Cinemas, to offer special “Mario-themed” showings, which will include interactive elements and giveaways. These events are expected to attract over 100,000 fans across the United States. A quiet turn in events has been the reaction from fans, with many expressing excitement and curiosity about the innovative approach.

Nintendo is always looking for new ways to engage with our audience, and this is just the beginning, said Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, in a statement.

The company has not disclosed the exact details of how the phone integration will work, but it has confirmed that it will be using a combination of audio cues and image recognition technology to synchronize the content. Nintendo expects to generate an additional $50 million in revenue from the ***** of the app and related merchandise.

The Super Mario Galaxy movie is based on the popular video game of the same name, which has sold over 12 million copies worldwide since its release in 2007. The movie’s production budget is estimated to be around $150 million, and it features an all-star voice cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi. As the release date approaches, fans are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to experience the beloved characters in a new and innovative way. What happens next will depend on the success of this experiment, and whether it sets a new standard for interactive movie experiences.
