Capcom is certainly on a roll. Almost every game it has published over the past several years has turned into an instant hit, and it seems the company has no intention of ending the streak. With Resident Evil Requiem now out, the long-standing franchise has hit new records, absolutely smashing the best releases of the past, including Resident Evil 4 Remake.

, which shows RE Requiem hovering around 320,000 concurrent players on release day. That would mean it almost doubled the highest franchise count, which until today belonged to RE4 Remake at 168,000. Resident Evil Requiem is the first mainline entry to feature Leon Kennedy as a core character since 2012, i.e., his last appearance as a major playable character in Resident Evil 6.

Raccoon City is nowhere near what it used to be. Screenshot by Destructoid He has spent over 13 years on the sidelines, and Requiem finally lets us take him for a spin throughout a ruined Raccoon City. Leon is much older and more rugged, reflecting the state of the game's world and the city in particular. The halls he wandered in Resident Evil 2, furnished and polished and with that imposing statue in the lobby, are now almost entirely ruined.

It's a very interesting take on an established character and universe, and while we do get introduced to Grace Ashcroft as the co-protagonist, Leon's appearance carries significant implications for the future of Resident Evil. We'll also probably get some DLC down the line, and I certainly hope they let us aura farm as we did with Chris in RE Village.

And players absolutely love it.
