Neon White Is One of the Best Indie FPS Games You Can Play

Image Credit: Angel Matrix Released in 2022 and available on Xbox Game Pass in April 2025, Neon White is hard to describe in simple genre terms. In the most basic sense, it’s a first-person shooter, but that description barely scratches the surface. Developed by Angel Matrix and led creatively by Ben Esposito, it’s a pretty unique game.

Neon White is a mix of fast platforming, time-attack challenges, and a clever card-based system that is one of the most fun and unique mechanics that we’ve seen. You play as a ****** hunter clearing Heaven of monsters, racing against the clock in small levels that have been designed to be replayed.

Just beat Neon White for the first time. I played it on a whim and it’s suddenly one of my all time favorites. I loved doom so playing this was what I was looking for

Each level is designed to be short, replayable, and focused on speed. The weapons in the game can be discarded to get special movement abilities through the card system, forcing players to constantly decide whether to keep a gun or drop it for a potentially better movement ability.

The art style is slick, the soundtrack by Machine Girl fuels the energetic and fast pace of the game, and the entire package feels like a love letter to late-’90s and early-2000s game design. And this is why the game currently sits at an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam. So if you want to try it out, do it fast!

five games will leave the service in the first half of the month, with all of them currently marked as “leaving soon” across console, PC, and cloud.

Alongside Neon White, we’ll be losing access to Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, Road 96, The Ascent, and The Grinch: Christmas Adventures – Merry & Mischievous Edition. Most of these titles are available until January 15 or January 16, and they’re currently discounted for subscribers who want to keep them permanently.

While several of these games are worth a look, Neon White is the one we’d recommend you try. If you’ve ever been even mildly curious about the game, now is the time. A few runs can turn into hours surprisingly fast.
