Nintendo has just released the latest patch notes for Mario Kart World, and before we dive into why one of the changes is so bad that it might put racers off VS. races altogether, let me quickly summarize what the patch includes.

Mario Kart World - Ver. 1.1.2 patch notes
General

  • Adjusted courses selected in “Random” when selecting next course in a wireless “VS Race.”
Fixed Issues

  • Made readjustments to fix an issue where rate fluctuations were sometimes displayed incorrectly in “Online Play” and “Knockout Tour.”
  • Fixed an issue where you sometimes can’t recover quickly after falling off the course in "Dino Dino Jungle".
  • Fixed an issue where you continually hit the wall near the finish line of “Boo Cinema” when transformed into Bullet Bill.
On the surface, it seems like a pretty standard patch notes, until you dig deeper into what "adjusted courses" means.

, the random option that many players used in VS. Races to obtain a classic three-lap track has been modified to include intermission tracks, a type of track that many players were trying to avoid by selecting
random.

Usually, when you go into a VS. Race lobby, you are greeted with three intermission tracks to pick from, where you drive from track to track, which a majority of online players do not like. Random was used as a way to get the classic Mario Kart experience, as you were given a single track where you'd complete a certain number of laps before moving onto the next one.

But for some reason, Nintendo has removed the option, and when you pick random now, you will get a chance of getting either a normal racing experience or a different intermission track. And as you can imagine,

Most comments from fans are aghast at how Nintendo could make a decision to force players to play the game in a way they do not want, instead of providing different options for players who don't mind the intermission tracks, and those who want a classic Mario Kart experience.

Most fans are hopeful that over time, Nintendo will listen to disgruntled fans and add more options, but right now, fans feel like Nintendo is targeting them specifically with this patch to make fans play the game as Nintendo intended, instead of what fans want.
