2024 NFL free-agency tracker: From Danielle Hunter to Jamal Adams, see where top 150 players land

NFL free agency is in full swing, with the legal tampering window opening Monday and the new league year beginning Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.

These are my updated rankings and scouting reports of the top 150 free agents available, shaped by a ton of film work and perspective from many years leading NFL personnel departments. This might not be exactly how you see it, but that’s why Baskin-Robbins has 31 flavors.

The ages listed are as of Sept. 5, the scheduled date of the 2024 season opener. At each position, I’ve included some stats I find valuable. At some positions, I’ve estimated play speed from what I can see on tape (not timed 40-yard dash speed — there is a difference). He also understands how to set the edge with length and get off of blocks against the run. His skill set is hard to find, and despite entering his 10th season, he doesn’t turn 30 until October. Franchise tags thinned out the top group of pass rushers, so he should be coveted.— ****** Mueller

Hunter’s signing essentially replaces Houston’s loss of edge Jonathon Greenard to Minnesota, so let’s just make it a trade. Hunter is 29, two-and-a-half years older than Greenard, and thus will get two fewer years, but there are similarities to their games. Hunter piled up 16.5 sacks and 80 pressures in 2023 from a variety of alignments, in both two- and three-point stances. When healthy — which was an issue earlier in his career — he has ability to dominate a game. At the very least, he will require every opposing offense to game plan how to handle him. Not only does he have a complete pass rush package in his toolbox, but he also plays the run with very good hands and leverage. This takes an already good Texans defense to the next level. To be honest with you, I thought the contract numbers would be even higher.— Mueller

Barkley’s natural instincts and vision to create beyond the play’s design make him special. He finishes like a 232-pound back should, with power and lean, but has the rare trait to make defenders miss as well. He’s also detailed and controlled as a route runner, which makes him the best three-down back available, even with durability concerns (25 games missed in six seasons, three in 2023). More than just a running back, he is a *******. Other teams might value him more than the Giants do. — Mueller

Barkley’s natural instincts and vision to create beyond the play’s design make him special. He finishes like a 232-pound back should, with power and lean, but has the rare trait to make defenders miss as well. He’s also detailed and controlled as a route runner, which makes him the best three-down back available, even with durability concerns (25 games missed in six seasons, three in 2023). More than just a running back, he is a *******. Other teams might value him more than the Giants do. — Mueller

If you can’t beat ‘em, get ‘em to join you. If nothing else, this is a really nice fit based on that alone. Weakening a division rival is never a bad idea. Barkley figured to be in high demand for several teams. His ability to be a three-down ******* and a first-down machine is rare and merited this sort of contract. Barkley should only be better if the Eagles’ offensive line can return to more of its form from 2022, rather than 2023. My only question is: Can new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore be a tad more run-game oriented than in his prior stops? Jalen Hurts and his skill set fit best with a more consistent running back and run game by his side. This should be very interesting to watch. — Mueller

Cousins is fundamental in every aspect of his game but at times can be mechanical and robotic. He is pretty efficient and has good intangibles. A tough leader who will stand in the pocket and can deliver most NFL throws, he has taken his skill set to a higher level with his mind and is still capable of being a mid-tier starting QB in the league, even coming off a significant injury. Will the Vikings be able to keep him as other suitors come calling? — Mueller

Cousins is in the business of football Hall of Fame. Regardless of the contract details here, he marks a major upgrade for a team that has really struggled to identify quarterback options. This is an easy evaluation for their people. Even if the commitment was longer than the Falcons might have wanted to make, it moves the needle in the NFC South immediately. Paying $45 million per year is an understandable rate considering the Falcons’ lack of other options. Cousins might not have the highest ceiling, but he brings an efficiency and consistency that they have really lacked. I could still see them adding a younger, long-term option at QB, too. — Mueller

The Browns had to make this move. Without a lot of cap space, they had to be focused on protecting the fort and making sure they didn’t take a step back by letting someone leave. Smith is an example of that, and given the contract details, this is a solid investment. The options to upgrade at edge rusher disappeared fast, in this market, Smith was going to draw significant interest. Smith will turn 31 in September, but $12 million per year for a versatile edge defender with pass rushing skills is good money spent. — Mueller

Wilkins is an incredibly versatile defensive tackle, given where he aligns and his ability to blend quickness with power. He can play in any scheme. He’s strong at the point of ******* but also has athletic ability and range. He’s a really good player, and his value keeps climbing after a career season. The cap-strapped Dolphins did not tag him, setting him up to cash in elsewhere. — Mueller

Wilkins was the best defensive tackle on the market after Justin Madubuike was tagged and Chris Jones re-signed in Kansas City, and he got paid like it. His power and athletic ability are very hard to find in an interior D-lineman. Drafting that skill set usually costs a high first-round pick (which Wilkins was, No. 13 in 2019). Offenses have to plan for him, and the Raiders have to figure out a way to stop the run. He will help that cause. — Mueller

Greenard is a great addition for the Vikings. Their top three pass rushers all hit free agency, and his production, durability and age lessen the ***** of the likely defections of Danielle Hunter and others. Greenard is sudden off the edge, showing game-changing quickness, and he can also turn that speed into power as a pass rusher. But he also gives them a solid run defender who closes with a high-energy motor in pursuit.— Mueller

Jacobs, who missed four games in 2023, has many of the same traits as Barkley, including power, good pad level and the ability to get more yards than the play is designed for. As a route runner, he is slightly less detailed than Barkley with his technique and slightly less nimble with his body control. But he carries the ball with a sense of anger and physicality that few have, and that is worth paying a premium for. — Mueller

Jacobs’ skill set combines what the Packers have needed two players — Aaron Jones (speed and agility) and AJ Dillon (power) — to give them in the past. He brings both to the table. Jacobs runs with very good pad level and power inside while still being elusive at the second level. He also has good hands and can make defenders miss after the catch. If healthy, he upgrades them at RB, without a doubt, even with Jones being released. — Mueller

He has great range and the ball skills to make plays when he gets there. His speed helps him catch up with almost anyone. Youth, athletic ability and instincts are all on his side. He’s my favorite among the available safeties. — Mueller

The Packers had some uncertainty at safety, with some young prospects and three free agents. They now have certainty with the addition of McKinney, who can function in multiple roles in the secondary. He doesn’t turn 25 until August. He has elite range and ball skills from center field but can also come up and press a slot if the defense gets caught in a mismatch of personnel. He can close from depth and is not afraid to insert himself in the box against the run, finishing second on the Giants last season with 116 tackles. I like the fact that he can play any scheme, making him an easy fit in a new defense in Green Bay. — Mueller

Cushenberry has the combination of strength and agility that everyone looks for in a center. He has now added a body of work to his resume and has shown improvement each season. He consistently sustains contact with controlling upper-body strength and active feet upon impact. He’s a really good player, and he appears likely to sign elsewhere given how much Denver has invested elsewhere up front. — Mueller

Cushenberry has the combination of strength and agility that everyone looks for in a center. He has now added a body of work to his resume and has shown improvement each season. He consistently sustains contact with controlling upper-body strength and active feet upon impact. He’s a really good player, and he appears likely to sign elsewhere given how much Denver has invested elsewhere up front. — Mueller

Cushenberry’s career path took a giant step in development last season. There is no reason to think that upward trend won’t continue. He is very quick for his size and is one of very few centers who can also get movement on impact and knock defenders back in the run game. This is a big upgrade for the Titans over the undersized Aaron Brewer. Cushenberry’s experience should help in making protection calls and communicating at the line of scrimmage when coupled with an inexperienced QB like Will Levis. — Mueller

Huff is a role player, as a pass rush specialist, but he has been very productive. He gets off the ball and under blocks as a pass rusher with incredible upfield burst. His pressure rate is the best in this free-agent class. His play against the run is a work in progress and will have to improve for him to become a full-time player. The Jets — who have already spent significant money and draft capital on the D-line — might struggle to afford him. — Mueller

Huff is a role player, as a pass rush specialist, but he has been very productive. He gets off the ball and under blocks as a pass rusher with incredible upfield burst. His pressure rate is the best in this free-agent class. His play against the run is a work in progress and will have to improve for him to become a full-time player. The Jets — who have already spent significant money and draft capital on the D-line — might struggle to afford him. — Mueller

The Eagles struggled to rush the passer individually in 2023. It was clear they were looking to upgrade. Huff makes sense because his opportunities were the only thing limiting his production, and he still had 10 sacks and 21 QB hits last season. He will clearly be the best pass rush option for the Eagles now. While he needs to improve as a run defender to become a full-time player, I think he has the ability, as he flashes hand usage to get him off blocks quickly. His fit, if asked to go forward and not drop in coverage, is a very good one. At 26 years old in April, he should be a solid investment for several years. It’s no surprise his market took off once Brian Burns and Josh Allen got tagged. — Mueller

Runyan plays with excellent initial quickness, and his reactions and instincts are really good. He combo-blocks to linebackers effectively and plays with timing and very good awareness. It helps that he can also play with bend and a solid punch. He’s developing into one of the better guards in the NFC. The Packers have already paid left guard Elgton Jenkins, so they’ll likely let Runyan walk. — Mueller

Floyd brings the 49ers a consistent edge rusher and motor but also — maybe more importantly — a complete football player. He has a really good nose for the ball, can key and diagnose plays and defends the run, even runs right at him, better than many in the league. His run defense has been overshadowed by his ability as a pass rusher (39.5 sacks over the last four seasons). He should benefit from being the bookend opposite Nick Bosa and take advantage of those opportunities more than the inconsistent Chase Young did. This is an upgrade for the Niners, and also a loss the Bills might struggle to recover from. — Mueller

Prev. team: Jaguars Age: 29 Ht: 6-1 Wt: 190

Ridley represents the best combination of size, speed and hands in this class. He comes off the ball quickly, eats up defenders’ cushions and gets in and out of breaks very fast. His suddenness jumps out, and he runs a complete route tree with the body control to win versus zone and man. He will frustrate with occasional drops, but it’s more about focus than hands. Because Ridley did not re-sign with the Jaguars before the new league year opened at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Jacksonville owes Atlanta a 2024 third-round pick (No. 79) from the 2022 trade for Ridley. He should hit the market atop a wideout class that was thinned by the franchise tag. — Mueller

Ridley was my top wide receiver entering free agency. He is explosive, can separate against man-to-man coverage and has the instincts to find open areas in zones. He will be the Titans’ No. 1 option, and I love the fact that he still has upside to develop as a player at age 29. Inopportune drops have reared their head on occasion, but that is more about concentration than Ridley lacking hands or ball skills. He had 76 catches and 49 first downs receiving in 2023. His speed will make teams defend the Titans differently, which should pay dividends for their run game. — Mueller

Williams’ frame is rare, and he fits best as a five-technique in a three-man line, which is really hard to find. His length and hand usage are two of his biggest attributes. He’s not a skilled, high-level pass rusher but is very effective versus both the run and pass. His style and substance mirror Wilkins, but he’s been a shade less productive and is two years older. — Mueller

The Bills, who face major cap constraints, have already paid Ed Oliver and have two other free-agent DTs, but keeping Jones should be a priority. — Mueller

Eluemunor has played right tackle in Las Vegas but might even be seen as a left tackle by some teams. He is a natural athlete with the feet and smooth agility to stay square on his targets, especially in pass protection. His ability to recover and play with consistent balance gives him a giant step up on the competition in this free-agent tackle pool. He makes it look easy at times. — Mueller

The Ravens declined Queen’s fifth-year option after they paid Roquan Smith, but considering Queen’s age, instincts and playmaking production, he is the best option at this position. He can run, blitz and play the run or pass equally well. He can be impulsive at times, but he flies around and makes plays. — Mueller

Prev. team: Ravens Age: 25 Ht: 6-0 Wt: 230

The Ravens declined Queen’s fifth-year option after they paid Roquan Smith, but considering Queen’s age, instincts and playmaking production, he is the best option at this position. He can run, blitz and play the run or pass equally well. He can be impulsive at times, but he flies around and makes plays. — Mueller

Even though the Ravens declined to exercise Queen’s option, he makes sense for any scheme and any team. His game is full speed ahead. Whether going downhill to ******* a block or laterally to chase a play down, he has been very productive. The downside to his high energy and motor is that he can be out of control and a bit too impulsive at times. As the quarterback of the defense, making calls and adjustments, he will assume a role that the Steelers have been trying to fill for a couple of years now. His age makes the investment easier to ********. It’s a steep price for an inside linebacker, but Queen’s ability to blitz and get to the QB sets him apart. He should see all three years of this deal. — Mueller

Simpson plays with the strength and physicality of an old-school guard. He can control with his upper body and strong hands but can also pull, lead and adjust. He needs to become more consistent, but he moves defenders in both the run and pass game. He’s trending to be a really good player, and the Ravens tend to let players sign elsewhere (and collect compensatory picks). Right guard Kevin Zeitler is also a free agent. — Mueller

Prev. team: Ravens Age: 27 Ht: 6-3 Wt: 330

Mooney’s high ranking is more about potential than his body of work. He can really run and shows the explosive ability to separate from coverage at every level. His ability to stretch the field can force opponents to defend the offense differently. His numbers will increase in a different scheme if the ball is delivered on time. Mooney does lack size, so he can be affected by incidental contact. Contested catches are the only small question I have. — Mueller

Mooney’s high ranking is more about potential than his body of work. He can really run and shows the explosive ability to separate from coverage at every level. His ability to stretch the field can force opponents to defend the offense differently. His numbers will increase in a different scheme if the ball is delivered on time. Mooney does lack size, so he can be affected by incidental contact. Contested catches are the only small question I have. — Mueller

The Falcons’ offense was in dire need of speed and playmaking, and Mooney will go a long way toward helping that cause. He can stretch defenses and give them some dynamic run-after-the-catch ability, which has been missing in a big way. He could not reach his potential in the limited passing game in Chicago the past couple of years. I would look for a breakout year in Atlanta (are you listening, fantasy owners)? — Mueller

Luvu is a really good player despite being on his NFL second team. He is very instinctive and blends explosive pop with speed and athletic ability. He’s often all over the field, running and hitting everything — and ball carriers go down when he hits them. He’s also a really good blitzer with some natural pass rushing skill, and he’s hitting the market with his stock at its peak. — Mueller

Prev. team: Panthers Age: 27 Ht: 6-3 Wt: 235

Luvu is a really good player despite being on his NFL second team. He is very instinctive and blends explosive pop with speed and athletic ability. He’s often all over the field, running and hitting everything — and ball carriers go down when he hits them. He’s also a really good blitzer with some natural pass rushing skill, and he’s hitting the market with his stock at its peak. — Mueller

Luvu was one of my favorite players to evaluate in this year’s free-agent pool, not just for his nonstop motor and relentless pursuit to the ball, but also for the numbers he produced. If Commanders fans are not familiar, they will be soon enough. Off the radar for most of his career, he led Carolina in 2023 with 125 total tackles. He also has 12.5 sacks and 20 QB hits over the last two seasons, lining up all over the field. At only 27, he is an ascending player who should be going sideline to sideline for the Commanders for several years. — Mueller

Prev. team: Cowboys Age: 33 Ht: 6-5 Wt: 320

Smith is still a high-level performer at the toughest position on the line. He just has not been able to stay healthy. He played in 13 games in 2023, but that equaled his highest mark since 2015, and he missed 33 of 50 games from 2020 to 2022. When on the field, he is strong, displaces defenders with an explosive punch and understands how to cut off angles. His lateral range has suffered some due to the injuries, but his physical presence sends a message to the opposition. — Mueller

He is a great athlete, with range in both zone and man coverage, and he can also get ball carriers on the ground as a last-resort tackler. Those boxes did not get checked with Kevin Byard, whom they acquired from Tennessee at the deadline and released last week. His strength and pad level make it tough for the first defender to get him on the ground. The play does not have to be blocked perfectly for Edwards to make it positive, and he is a better player than his numbers would tell you. I see him as a very undervalued commodity, and I love the fit with the Chargers, where Edwards will be reunited with former Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman. — Mueller

He’ll also pair very nicely with speedster Keaton Mitchell. Henry will help the Ravens close out games, and they played with a lead more than any other team in the league in 2023. He had 63 first-down rushes and zero fumbles in 2023, cementing the feeling that there’s still tread left on his tire, even at age 30. His fifth gear might not be what it used to be, but gears 1-4 are still really good. Taking a slight haircut over his previous salary in Tennessee, he signed for a second-tier deal, so that part makes sense as well. — Mueller

On the surface, the price tag on this signing might seem out of line. But Hunt brings size, power and a strong anchor in pass protection to a team that must stop ************ in front of a shorter-than-normal QB in Bryce Young. Trust me, not every option at guard fits that criteria. Hunt’s natural anchor and ability to hold his position against power pass rushers is worth more to the Panthers than to others. The Saints built the interior of their line differently for years in front of 6-foot Drew Brees. Hunt can also displace defenders on contac and, at 6-6 and 330-plus pounds, can be very physical in the run game, which can wear down defenses in the fourth quarter. — Mueller

From a football standpoint, I actually this makes sense and is a good fit. Arthur Smith’s offense is heavy on the run game, RPOs and play-action passes, which help facilitate straightforward reads and allow the quarterback to predeterminine targets in the pass game. That suits Wilson’s skills well at this point. The Steelers already have some leaders on that roster, so it won’t be the “Russell show,” but yet he could bring a bit of been-there, done-that confidence to the offense. His personality also might fit better with Mike Tomlin and Smith than it did with Sean Payton, which might be as important as his skill set at this point. I don’t think this move means Kenny Pickett is gone, just maybe a chance to take a step back and watch. — Mueller

I actually really like this fit. We mentioned this on the Football GM podcast a couple of weeks back as a possibility. It’s lazy to just say, Darnold can’t possibly be the answer. The film this season showed an accurate passer who was poised in the pocket and definitive with his processing and locating of targets in Kyle Shanahan’s scheme. It’s amazing how a QB can function when given answers by the scheme. He will also find comfort in Minnesota with familiarity at QB coach in Josh McCown, his former backup in New York.
