There might be some consternation between the wider Sleeping Beauties theme of sustainability and circularity, and the overconsumption of the $3 trillion fashion industry.

And sustainability can sometimes be hard to find in the interpretations on the notoriously maximalist red carpet.

Stella McCartney has been a longtime champion of cruelty-free and sustainable practices in her work, and tonight’s looks—worn by Cara Delevingne, Ed Sheeran, and his wife Cherry Seaborn—feature zero-emissions VRAI created diamonds.

According to a press release from Stella McCartney, who will have two dresses in the Met exhibition, Delevigne’s red carpet look is “the most sustainable” of her cohort, and has “the emission equivalency of recycling 11.3 tons of waste instead of it going to a landfill, since every carat of VRAI created diamonds produced saves 143 lbs of carbon dioxide.”
