North Melbourne in Bunbury: Kangaroos ruckman Tristan Xerri says club wants to make new home a stronghold

North Melbourne’s first-up victory in Bunbury was a big step in making the club’s new Hands Oval home an unlikely stronghold, according to star ruckman Tristan Xerri.

The Kangaroos — who have sold games to Western Australia and the South West city on a three-year deal — ran over the top of West Coast in the final quarter of their clash on Sunday to win by 10 points.

They will face Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Saturday evening as part of their two-game stay, but will next year return to Bunbury to face the Dockers.

Kangaroos ruckman Tristan Xerri had 22 touches and 10 clearances to go with his 37 hit-outs in a battle with Matt Flynn.

He believes selling fixtures to the west can help the club win matches.

The move came as the Kangaroos wind down their ties to Hobart, where they won 18 of their 40 games, despite languishing at the bottom of the ladder in recent years.

“Yeah definitely (we can win games here) and I think the boys love it,” Xerri told The West ***********.

“We got a pretty nice set up, it’s pretty close to the beach so it’s pretty handy there before and after training just refreshing.

“It’s obviously a bit warmer than Melbourne. It’s nice and obviously a bit of bonding for us too, while we’re away here.”

The Kangaroos celebrated the win with their entire touring party at a private function at a Bunbury pub. They had received significant support in town from locals and a large number of travelling supporters.

Xerri conceded the game was a bit rough around the edges, but said it was the perfect start to the club’s ties to Bunbury.

“Obviously it was great to get the four points. I imagine it wasn’t the most enjoyable spectacle out there with the amount of behinds and the low-scoring game, but I mean, we take the four points however it comes,” Xerri told The West.

“I don’t think it was overly breezy, but there was a little bit and it was going whichever way — it was hard to pick.

“It was a bit dewy, especially in that second half. It got real slippery and really contested, which didn’t help the spectacle.”
