Heavy rain causing flooding problems for Boardman neighborhood

(WKBN) — Heavy rain is proving to be an issue for some local residents. It’s not only flooding streets and backyards, but also inside their homes.

It’s an issue that residents say hasn’t happened since 2019, but after Friday’s heavy rain, it’s a problem that can’t be ignored.

“At this point, I’m getting paranoid of what’s going to happen. Is my basement going to flood?” said Melanie Timmings, a Huntington Woods resident.

“The rain started and the flooding started occurring, and it just didn’t stop for at least an hour,” said Greg Pugh, another Huntington Woods resident.

Many residents living in the Huntington Woods neighborhood share the same concerns. Video shows water rushing from Tippecannoe Road through the Huntington Ridge condos before running into the yards in Huntington Woods. Yards were left with debris washed in from the flood, and a part of a resident’s wall was damaged in the process.

Residents say when the water backs up, it not only floods out of their backyards but also into their basements and garages.

“I did have some seeping through the walls. Luckily, my sump pump was working to its potential and doing its job. We did get the water cleaned up, but [I’m] fearful every time it rains — what’s going to happen to my house?” Timmings said.

The flooding also creates an impact on traffic. With only two ways to enter and exit Huntington Woods, residents say it forces them to stay home.

“If it gets real bad and if the road’s flooded and we have severe weather, how do we get out if the roads are blocked?” Pugh said.

Residents hope township officials will look into the issue and that a solution will be found.

“This can’t be happening every time it rains. People’s houses are getting damaged, basements flooded. It’s just not right,” Pugh said.

“Hopefully, the city takes this seriously and something can be done about it so it doesn’t happen again,” Timmings said.
