Super Netball 2025: West Coast Fever coach Dan Ryan says margins small after 11-goal win over NSW Swifts

West Coast Fever coach Dan Ryan has warned the margin for error against top four sides is so small there isn’t much between a win and a heavy defeat.

Fever ended the NSW Swifts’ unbeaten start to the season, claiming an upset 79-68 victory the ladder-leaders at Ken Rosewall Arena on Saturday night.

It was their seventh consecutive victory and has Fever primed for a second premiership as the form side of the competition.

And while Ryan was pleased with the victory, he said the difference between the two teams was not too big.

“We need to make sure we’re consistent across a full quarter as opposed to the full 60 minutes,” he said.

“There were moments where the Swifts had dominance, whether it was the first five minutes or second minutes and we really at those blocks of time in great detail.

“The margin for error when the top four go head-to-head is so small and even though we’re really happy with our 11-goal win, there’s always going to be parts of our game where we now we need to be better and we’ll dive deep into those parts.”

In a contrasting battle of styles, the Swifts weren’t afraid to throw the bibs around as they tried to find the best balance of their seven.

Ryan said it was something they were prepared for after their 18-goal round one defeat to NSW.

“It was something that we were aware might happen across the course of the game and that is a trademark Swifts in how they like to operate their team,” he said.

“Our adaptability to not get too caught up in that and just stay locked into the subtle adjustments we have to make when a position has changes, or a defensive structure was changed or a dynamic in the front line – the players were focused in those moments which was key for us.”

Arguably the biggest match-up of the game was that between Fever defender Kadie-Ann Dehaney and Swifts shooter Grace Nweke.

Nweke dominated their round one encounter with 51 goals but was held to only 48 from 60 attempts on Saturday night.

“I loved it, I reckon Kadie loved it too and I’m sure Grace loved it too,” Ryan said.

“They’re great competitors and the showdown between those two was great to see and both of them had their moments at different times.

“Kadie-Ann’s persistence tonight was important for us as a team. She chipped away and had great support there through Sunday (Aryang), Fran (Williams) and Jess (Anstiss) out the front of her and found some moments to impact which was great because we always knew that was going to be a really hard part of the game.”
