LOUIS – St. Louis police spiked dozens of vehicles overnight while responding to an apparent late-night “stunt” driving event, part of an ongoing push to curb reckless driving. It’s unclear how many of those vehicles were directly involved in stunt driving. SLMPD tells FOX 2 there were no immediate arrests and no reports of crashes or injuries. Just after midnight Saturday, officers responded to reports of dangerous driving in the 6500 block of Manchester Avenue, located in the City’s Ellendale neighborhood. When they arrived, they found several vehicles “performing stunts on a parking lot,” according to SLMPD. That’s when police used spike strips to stop dozens of the fleeing vehicles. “The spiking of these fleeing vehicles sends a clear message — this reckless behavior is not welcome in St. Louis and we will continue to enforce the law,” said Mitch McCoy, SLMPD Director of Public Affairs and Information, in a statement to FOX 2. Subscribe Now Multiple police units responded to the scene, including Mobile Reserve officers, along with the Anti-Crime Task Force, SWAT and Drug Enforcement & Intervention units. This response comes after various weekend incidents during which SLMPD responded to other reckless driving complaints, including dirt bike groups, which led to several arrests and vehicle seizures.
