People called 911 wondering why they didn’t see police. “If you don’t get somebody out here pretty soon, somebody’s going to get killed,” one caller said. “I don’t want to go out there,” another said. “I don’t know if there’s going to be shooting next.” “It’s massive,” another added. “Like people racing down the street. After midnight on May 17, big crowds of people filled the streets and yards off West 143rd Street. Cars lined up bumper-to-bumper with no way for anyone to get through. Yet, there was no sign of the Cleveland police. “OK, we’re sending officers out there,” dispatch told one caller. “I called 30 minutes ago. You all still ain’t send a car,” the caller responded. “It’s been going on for like two hours,” another 911 caller said. “We’re going to try to get officers over there. It’s really, really, really busy,” another dispatcher tried to explain to a caller. At a meeting, city councilman Brian Kazy confronted the safety director. Someone had rented a house and it was used for a huge party. “I finally called the chief at one in the morning,” the councilman said. “This terrorized a whole neighborhood. Calls started coming in at 10:30. It took a call from the councilman to the chief to finally get cars down there.” “It shouldn’t have to take you calling the chief of police to get cars there,” safety director Wayne Drummond said. So, what happened? We listened to two dozen 911 calls. Again and again, we heard police were trying to get officers out there or they would be there soon. How were there no officers free to break up a massive neighborhood disturbance for hours? “Now they’re out here doing doughnuts in the intersection with people hanging out of the cars,” one more caller told dispatch. In this case, Cleveland City Hall released a statement, saying, “the Department of Public Safety and Division of Police are investigating at this time.” Cleveland police always tell the public, “see something, say something.” Here, taxpayers called for help after what they saw, but they were left waiting. “Called about 15 to 20 minutes ago. They were going to send somebody. They need to send somebody over here now,” another caller complained. Kazy is also dealing with the landlord about renting out the house and allowing someone to bring in hundreds of people.
