Marvel Rivals Community Erupts Over Hilariously Misleading Ad

Marvel Rivals hit the shelves in December 2024 and proved to be an instant success. Bringing a roster of legendary heroes from Marvel Comics, a 6v6 format, and fast-paced gameplay, Marvel Rivals managed to lure in frustrated Overwatch 2 players and those who had never tried the genre before.

Marvel Rivals continues to dominate the hero-shooter landscape, but the community isn’t happy. One of the recent promotional ads for the title on

has caused a massive uproar in the community as it’s simply misleading. Seriously, NetEase Games, how about you overhaul your marketing department?

Marvel Rivals is misleading players with false ads

We all know how pathetic mobile game marketing can be. Tons of free-to-play mobile games emerge on a daily basis, relying on bait and switches to engage players. These games are promoted as something completely different from what they actually are. It’s just ragebaiting at its worst, and somehow, people do fall for it.

Usually, you wouldn’t expect such tactics from triple-A gamers. After all, this industry is known for spending millions upon millions on marketing their games. However, that’s not the case with Marvel Rivals. User WeepTheHorizion took to r/Marvel Rivals and showcased one of the Marvel Rivals ads on

that not only relies on mobile game marketing tactics but also misleads players.

Seriously, what kind of marketing is this? It takes weeks, if not months, to go from Bronze to Eternity in Marvel Rivals. There’s absolutely no way to reach Eternity within a matter of 10 hours unless you’re some kind of god of hero-shooters. As you’d expect, players are mocking this ad in the comments section of the thread.

While we can bash Marvel Rivals all day for pulling off such tactics, we can’t forget the fact that NetEase Games is a mobile gaming company. That’s right, folks; before the release of Marvel Rivals, the developer was known for its mobile hits such as Knives Out and Blood Strike.

Even though it’s handling a triple-A game like Marvel Rivals now, it hasn’t grown out of its mobile gaming mentality. Clearly, something needs to change, as such advertisements harm the reputation of the hero-shooter.

pushed out overly sexualized advertisements. (Image via NetEase Games)

It’s not the first time we’ve seen Marvel Rivals pushing out false and questionable ads. If you’re unaware, a few months ago, one of the hero shooter’s ads was outright flagged by *********** authorities for going against the Code of Ethics for Violence.

This ad showcased Invisible Woman in her infamous Malice skin alongside the text “ABUSE HER This Season.” The narrator urges gamers to take advantage of Invisible Woman while they can.

If you look at the ad through the hero-shooter lens, the term “abuse” obviously means using the character while she remains broken. Even the skin featured in the ad can be purchased in Marvel Rivals, but it seems too revealing.

However, players believe that the ad is overly sexualized and carries the idea of committing violence against women. The way Marvel Rivals portrays its characters is seriously disturbing and something that NetEase Games must address going forward.

With that said, have you encountered any of these misleading Marvel Rivals advertisements? Let us know in the comments below.
