XDefiant’s Mark Rubin exits gaming industry

Back in December, it was announced Ubisoft was shutting down XDefiant and closing down the San Francisco branch that developed it. June 3 was the game’s cut off date and executive producer Mark Rubin, who previously helmed Call of Duty, has asserted that he’s done with the industry.

, Rubin states that he is done with the industry, choosing to spend more time with his family. He does note that he hopes someone else “can pick up the flag” that he was trying to carry and make games people enjoy. He also attributes the game shuttering, which Ubi blamed a lack of new players, to the lack of marketing the live service game got, especially post-launch. He also points out the struggle of using an in-house engine not made for the type of game the team was making.

It’s a sad day for fans of XDefiant and for all of the passionate devs that worked so hard on this game. I want to thank everyone who played it and everyone who promoted it whether you were a big content creator or just a fan. Every voice mattered.

Rubin also said that the team simply didn’t have the resources to make new content and that some of the features that was planned for Season 4 and 5 would’ve made the game feel more launch-ready.
