Is the Delphi Corporation to Blame for Pragmata’s Sci-Fi Horrors?

If you’re an avid fan of horror games, Pragmata might have popped up on your radar. Capcom’s newest IP might give the vibes of a Dead Space game, but it’s not the same. However, there is one particular horror story trope that might apply to the new game. In case you haven’t guessed it, we’re talking about evil corporations messing things up.

For real, Resident Evil‘s Umbrella Corps, Evil Within‘s Ruin Corporation, every single one of them has this trope. From the looks of the Pragmata‘s trailer, the Delphi Corporation might be on the same path. Instead of some weird zombie virus, Delphi has a messed-up generative AI system. You know the story never ends well with corrupted AI.

Spoiler Alert !!!

The following section contains spoilers for Fallout live-action series, Evil Within 2, and some other games.

Delphi Corporation must be cooking some evil stuff in the basement

When you see the trailer of Pragmata, you’ll see a short cutscene that introduces Delphi Corporation. To regular eyes, it will seem like just another company that is advertising its revolutionary AI tech. However, it is quickly followed by a gitchy scene and then showcases Hugh and Diana.

That glitch itself is enough to foreshadow that Delphi is somehow behind all the lunar space station drama. But since the Delphi introduction cutscene shows their Lunafilament advanced generative AI, Hugh may be stuck in a simulation. If you’ve played Evil Within 2, then you know how that works.

Of course, like every other white-collared tech company in game stories, they tend to show themselves as pioneers. Deep down, there are secrets that are not meant for faint hearts. Abstergo Industries in Assassin’s Creed, Umbrella Corps, you name it, all of them are corrupt. It’s possible that Delphi hooked Hugh to a simulator, and as a result, he got stuck.

If you pay close attention at the beginning, Hugh states that Diana saved him from dying. Saved him from what, exactly? Maybe Delphi Corporation was doing some kind of trial run with multiple people in a lunar research station simulation. Maybe the generative AI malfunctioned and caused Hugh to be stuck in a nightmare.

Knowing how horror game story logic works, Delphi Corporation really stinks of some evil stuff. Okay, not just horror games, pretty much every sci-fi story. To be fair, a lot of us like that trope to a certain extent. Only if it is done right, though.

Never trust a big corporate company in video game storylines

Capcom might be implementing the same ideology by introducing the Delphi Corporation in Pragmata. Maybe they’ll take a Silent Hill type approach, any Delphi is only simulating out of the darkest fears of Hugh. That would be a more sensible approach. But if you want to showcase an evil corporation, then there have to be some shady elements.

In every single video game story, you’ll come across a suspicious corporation trying to control everything. In the Resident Evil series, you’ll find Umbrella Corps trying to cover up the spread of T-Virus. In Assassin’s Creed, you’ll find that Abstergo Industries is controlled by Templars, and they’ve never been up to any good.

In the Fallout live-action series, you’ll get to know that Vault-Tec was responsible for the nuclear fallout that reshaped the world. It’s always implied in video games that big corporations are to blame if things go south. It is fair to say that, as powers corrupt people. Not everyone is Spider-Man.

Do you think Capcom will break the evil corporation trope with Pragmata? What do you think is happening in the story of Pragmata? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
