Conservationists celebrate annual big planting day to protect the Margaret River

Nature Conservation Margaret River Region has celebrated the biggest turn-out of the year with more than 170 volunteers planting almost 2000 seedlings on the banks of the Margaret River late last month.

The Sunday, May 18 event was the conservation group’s annual Wooditjup Bilya planting day where each year volunteers targeted a needy area of the river precinct to help restore and protect.

This year, the inland central catchment came in for some extra love, with the efforts of community-minded local nature custodians lauded by organisers.

“This is an area of the river that really needs important revegetation work to protect the health of the waterway, reduce runoff, improve water quality, widen the riparian buffer zone, and provide food and shelter for our special wildlife,” engagement officer Jodie Passmore said.

“The site is located on private land and we teamed up with a private landholder who is chipping in to fund the work, and this is an area where we and the community can really make a difference to the Margaret River or Wooditjup Bilya.

“We had thousands of plants to get into the ground, so it was so heart-warming and inspiring to see all hands-on deck from our amazing community.”

Attendees also received an official Welcome to Country from Wadandi custodian Zac Webb and an address from veteran ornithologist Simon Cherriman who has championed handmade bird boxes to support nesting nature birdlife.
