Nedlands changes number of people needed for committee meetings after councillor no-shows

Less than half of the City of Nedlands council will need to be at committee meetings to make them official after walk-outs and no-shows forced past meetings to be abandoned.

At its most recent meeting, the council unanimously agreed to temporarily reduce the minimum attendance from more than 50 per cent — which equates to five members — to three.

The city’s three committees — audit risk and improvement, governance and the CEO performance review committee — each comprise all eight current elected members.

The change comes after recent committee meetings ended early or could not start because of a lack of numbers, brought about by one past councillor’s resignation, limits on electronic attendance and absenteeism.

Monthly regular council meetings have also struggled to reach quorum at Nedlands, with its April meeting having to be reconvened three times after two councillors walked-out mid-meeting on two separate occasions.
