One of Call of Duty’s Most Infamous Games Tried to Break a Major Tradition, Would’ve Revolutionized the Franchise

Our beloved Call of Duty franchise has been known to delve into all kinds of eras when guns were used (except the pirate age, but that would be just weird). From the beaches of Normandy to Clean House, the video games have done it all.

However, not every video game in the franchise has been successful. One of the most disastrous video games in the franchise is Call of Duty: Vanguard, which, despite strong commercial sales, received mixed or average reviews. What many people fail to notice is that Call of Duty: Vanguard tried to break free of a trend that every Call of Duty game had followed.

Call of Duty: Vanguard was not your average Band of Brothers experience

It was in 2021 that Vanguard was released, and thousands of copies had been pre-ordered, and thousands more were sold on the day of the release. Call of Duty: Vanguard was one of the highest-selling video games in 2021.

Despite the high sales and all the word-of-mouth publicity that the game got, the reviews started flowing in, and Call of Duty: Vanguard was deemed as one of the worst games in the franchise.

The single-player campaign was too short (just around 5 hours), since the majority of the focus was given to the multiplayer setting. This ruined the vibe for gamers who wanted to feel an authentic World War II story. However, it wasn’t all bad.

During the game’s release, Sledgehammer Games’ art director Joseph Salud sat down for a chat with

to talk about Vanguard. During his talks, Salud mentioned that the game wasn’t the usual Band of Brothers-like video game and instead focused on a broader approach to war.

I think with this one [Call of Duty: Vanguard], we wanted to take it to more modern lands, we were inspired a lot more by more recent and contemporary influences, and we were also inspired by epic films of the past – the classic epics.

He continued,

The last game was more about the European campaign, so we wanted to show the broader sense of the war. We traveled to all the different campaign fronts, from the Eastern Front to the Pacific and North Africa, just to get that diversity and variety.

Well, the idea was brilliant, the storyline was perfect, but there was one fatal flaw that brought the iconic franchise to its knees. The gameplay was kept too short.

Although the gameplay mechanics and the realism from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) were present in Vanguard, the bad thing was that it ended too early. If that wasn’t the case, the iconic game could have revolutionized the franchise for the better.

Call of Duty: Vanguard could have revolutionized the franchise!

Every single Call of Duty game that you have ever played has always been about a squad or a group of soldiers who come together to blast and fight their way through everything.

In the ****** Ops franchise, it was Alex Mason and his friend Victor Reznov (who was a part of Call of Duty: World at War). In the Modern Warfare franchise, it was Soap MacTavish. In Call of Duty: World War II, it was Ronald “Red” Daniels, you get the point.

In every Call of Duty game, we have seen the role of a protagonist who is accompanied by allies and recurring characters from the franchise, where we have to fight our way through soldiers and machines to reach our objective.

In Call of Duty: Vanguard, the premise was flipped. Different stories, different POVs, all set around the end of World War II, where players lived through multiple stories and multiple battlefronts in a singular video game.

That was what Vanguard tried to do differently. Honestly, if the campaign had been kept a little bit longer, the iconic video game would have actually revolutionized the franchise and taken the franchise into a newer direction.

However, with the failure of the video game, it seems that the franchise will be following the same-old protagonist with allies style gameplay and storyline.
