Fremantle Dockers lock in Justin Longmuir until end of 2025 after surprise new deal

Fremantle have moved to douse speculation about Justin Longmuir’s future this season, extending the coach’s contract by a solitary year.

In a rare move, the Dockers defied the AFL trend of multi-year contracts and announced a one-year extension for the fifth-year coach, who had been entering the final season of his deal.

Dockers chief executive Simon Garlick said the club was confident Longmuir remained the right man for the role.

“We believe in what we are building here at the Fremantle Dockers,” Garlick said.

“Justin embodies the coaching excellence and vision that aligns with our ambitions.

“He has an incredible handle on the game and is passionate about teaching it in a way that resonates with and is impactful to his players.

“We strongly believe in the program that Justin, our playing group and overall football department are embedding and driving, and the decision to extend his contract is aligned with what we believe we can achieve in the coming years and beyond.”

Longmuir said he was “grateful for the continuity” that the fresh deal brought to the playing group on the eve of the season.

“The club’s support, especially through the recent alterations and additions to our football department, has been significant,” he said.

“I am extremely excited by the playing group, coaching team and support staff around me, all of whom I have complete trust in.

“This team is the most connected group I have encountered during my tenure and I am eager to see what we can achieve.

“We are all committed to achieving success, and I’m excited to lead this talented group towards our goals.”

The contract call on the eve of the season leaves Adelaide’s Matthew Nicks as the AFL’s sole coach without a deal beyond this year.
