Its replacement cost, construction time outlined The Beckman Road bridge over Interstate 90 in Girard Township will likely be demolished in mid-summer. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation expects to seek contractors’ bids for the work as early as June 5 and to award the bid in mid-July. Demolition would begin shortly afterward. Preliminary estimates for the demolition cost are between $500,000 and $1 million. The bridge has been closed since it was hit by a tractor-trailer on Feb. 14. Accident caused structural damage to bridge The collision caused significant damage to bridge beams, according to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation inspections. The bridge was immediately closed and traffic was detoured onto Tannery, Sterrettania, Keefer and Franklin roads. The Jordan Road bridge over Interstate 90 in Harborcreek is shown in March, before demolition began. The bridge will be rebuilt this year. The upper portion of the bridge and its support pier will be removed. A new bridge will be built when I-90 reconstruction resumes in 2028. To rebuild or not to rebuild PennDOT had considered removing and not replacing the Beckman Road bridge. The department determined in 2023 that the bridge would be demolished and rebuilt, based on traffic patterns in the area, cost estimates for various alternatives and public feedback. An estimated 125 vehicles cross the bridge each day. It will be the fifth bridge over the interstate in western Erie County to be demolished since 2011 as a result of vehicle-caused damage. How traffic will be impacted by construction Traffic on the interstate between the Girard and Fairview interchanges will be confined to single lanes at times while the bridge is demolished. Traffic also will be stopped at times to accommodate the work. Beckman Road traffic will continue to be detoured until the new bridge opens in 2028.
