IZARD COUNTY, Ark. – The Arkansas State Police were granted a sweeping cell phone data search warrant in pursuit of escaped Arkansas convict Grant Hardin.

The May 29 warrant requires data from all cell towers in Izard County from service providers AT&T, U.S. Cellular, T-Mobile, and Verizon. The affidavit for the warrant states that investigators hope to use cell phone location data to identify where Grant Hardin may be hiding.

The affidavit asked for data between May 24 and May 29, bracketing the time of Hardin’s May 25 escape from the Board of Corrections North Central Unit in Calico Rock.

A second document confirms investigators received the data from the service providers on May 31.

The affidavit states the state police do not want communication data, only location data. Location data is from cell phones, essentially checking in with the nearest cell tower as they move through the area.

Each time a cell phone checks in, it leaves unique identifying data relative to the particular phone. Cell phone service providers log this data, which, according to the affidavit, can provide relatively precise location information.
