GSSA 2025: Bayswater throw away two-goal lead and chance for first points of season as Caledonians stay top

Basement dwellers Bayswater gave up a 3-1 lead before going down 4-3 to table-toppers Albany Caledonian in the men’s senior league on Friday, May 30.

Zachary Cash put the underdogs ahead after nine minutes and Henry Goldsmith added a second in the 29th to suggest a shock was on the cards in the Great Southern Soccer Association fixture.

And while Fraser Grant pulled one back for the leaders, Goldsmith grabbed his second just after the break to put Bayswater in touch of their first win of the season.

But Grant’s second pegged them back to 3-2 and the equaliser came on 62 minutes when Joseph Love scored.

Three minutes later came the kicker, a penalty converted by Douglas Grant for the winner, leaving Albany five points clear at the top and Bayswater pointless at the bottom.

Polonia were beaten 4-1 by Rovers, with Nick Irvine’s 65th-minute red card not helping.

Jeremy Wallis had put Polonia ahead, but scores from Joseph Iaruel and Justin Bielecki, Andreas Bouzinekis had put Rovers 3-1 up before Irvine’s second yellow.

Malachi Tsuki added Rovers’ fourth.

In the women’s senior competition on May 23, Denmark put 11 goals past Sharks without reply and Rovers beat Phoenix 4-0.

Sharks had lost 8-0 to Albany Caledonian on Wednesday, May 21, while Denmark and Rovers drew 1-1.

Albany top the table with 12 points, five clear of Denmark.

Denmark Rezzies were 3-2 winners over Albany Caledonian in the women’s reserves competition on May 23. Trailing 2-1 after an hour, Lumeah Masih turned the tables for Denmark with goals in the 76th and 83rd minutes.

Phoenix hammered Rovers 6-0.

In the men’s reserves competition on May 24, Albany Caledonian beat Bayswater 5-0 while Polonia were 2-0 winners over Rovers.

In the men’s socials, there were wins for Denmark Blue Wrens, Crosskeys, Rovers, Polonia and Phoenix.

Old Boys and Rovers Vets drew 0-0.

The women’s development league brought victories for Mt Barker and Polonia over Bayswater and Sharks respectively.

Griffins, Sharks and Denmark Dream enjoyed wins in the women’s social league on May 21, while Albany Caledonian Thistle, Polonia and Griffins were celebrating wins on May 23.
