10 Years Ago This Week, The Most Underrated Bethesda Game Became the King of Open Worlds

No one can deny the fact that Bethesda, under the watch of Todd Howard, has crafted some of the greatest video games of all time. From first-party titles such as Fallout and The Elder Scrolls to the stellar work done by various developers under its wing, there are tons of quality Bethesda games to get lost in for hours.

Although Bethesda has transformed the gaming space, its most iconic title was announced 10 years ago this week and completely shook up open-world RPGs. Which game are we talking about here? Well, if it isn’t obvious by now, it’s none other than Fallout 4. That’s right, folks. It’s been a decade since Howard unveiled this game.

Fallout 4 is still the king of open-world games

We all know that the Fallout franchise is Bethesda’s crown jewel. It’s been going on for years, and with the emergence of the Prime Video show, it has attracted a new generation of fans. When the company took over the franchise, it gave us Fallout 3, which absolutely took over the gaming world.

However, then came Fallout 4. The successor was revealed at the E3 event in June 2015, and its new setting, game mechanics, and graphics. Bethesda promised a game that would push forward the RPG industry and elevate the post-apocalyptic franchise to new heights.

Unfortunately, Fallout 4 wasn’t received well at its release. Sure, it was quite a step up when it came to gameplay elements and graphical fidelity, but players felt that it was lacking in the narrative department. What’s worse is that it continued the tradition of a buggy Bethesda game, which was left to be fixed by modders.

The mixed reception doesn’t take away from the fact that Fallout 4 completely changed how players perceived open-world games. Players have the freedom to explore the wasteland and make the choices that shape the world.

We have dynamic environments, crafting mechanics, and hundreds of side quests that make everything feel impactful and alive. It’s been almost a decade since the release of Fallout 4, and still, we haven’t seen this kind of open-world gameplay in any RPG so far.

Where’s the next Fallout game, Bethesda!?

The Fallout 4 franchise is perhaps the most crucial iconic entry in the franchise, and it’s expected that the RPG’s sequel will continue that tradition. There’s a slight issue, though; it’s been a decade, and we still haven’t received any mainline Fallout games.

So, where exactly is Fallout 5 or whatever it’s going to be called? Well, it’s still years away, even another decade. Currently, Bethesda is working hard on Elder Scrolls 6 as its next major game. This is coming right after the release of the Oblivion Remastered, which was a collaboration project with Virtuos Studios.

It’s been stated by Howard that a Fallout game takes around five years to develop. Considering all these factors, it’s unlikely Fallout 5 will hit the shelves before the 2030s, and even that could be pushed forward depending on when Elder Scrolls 6 releases.
