For Assassin’s Creed Hexe to Work, Ubisoft Must Avoid This One Cliche

As per recent leaks, Ubisoft seems to have no intention of stopping its expansion of the Assassin’s Creed universe. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows was the most recent entry within the Assassin’s Creed universe, and was generally well received, being considered as one of the stronger AC titles in recent years.

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Hexe seems to be a very different kind of Assassin’s Creed, with a greater emphasis on dark, foreboding tones this time around. However, recent leaks seem to paint a rather tired trope for the game, which must be avoided at all costs.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe goes on with the same tired revenge trope

As per multiple leaks online (more precisely from Bunny – a well-regarded Ubisoft leaker and Partner), Hexe will feature a female protagonist this time around, named Elsa. Players are handed control of Elsa as soon as the game begins and will have to hunt down her mother’s killers.

The game takes place during the infamous Witch Trials, during which Elsa’s mother was unjustly murdered. Hexe plays off as a simple revenge story and will have a dark, haunting tone, much like what Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was supposed to be during its initial builds.

Interestingly, this would make Assassin’s Creed Hexe have the first female-only series protagonist, which is a clear departure from the AC formula of old. This about wraps it up for the rumors. Bunny has yet to share any additional details surrounding the game’s plot or gameplay elements.

As always, keep in mind that this is based on rumors and does not represent the final, retail version of the game. For all we know, Hexe could turn out to be very different from its current, rumored portrayal. Take this information with a grain of salt.

Ubisoft must innovate before it is too late

It’s no secret that Ubisoft has begun to stagnate and is falling out of favor with fans and investors alike. Players are tired of seeing the same old, bland open-world design that does not invoke curiosity or awe.

By going down with the same, bland revenge trope that has plagued Assassin’s Creed games before, Ubisoft might be shooting itself in the foot with Hexe. The publisher-developer duo seriously needs to reconsider its current path of action.

A great place to start would be the execution and delivery of Hexe’s story. While it might be too late to drop the whole revenge plot, executing it in an ideal manner might just be what the series needs to survive.

The Last of Us Part 2 comes to mind, and despite its controversial character handling, it was a pretty nuanced take on revenge storytelling. Ubisoft also needs to improve its gameplay, especially its combat dynamics.

Another area to focus on is the overall presentation of the game. Assuming these leaks are correct, though, Ubisoft might already have a winning formula this time around. How this will all play out remains to be seen.
