Did You Catch the Influence Behind Fallout New Vegas’ NCR Posters?

Fallout as a series has always been marked by quite a fair bit of in-game propaganda, most of which has been satirical. The game also features a ton of groups that one can align with, each with varying beliefs and consequences.

Combining these two, we have the NCR propaganda posters, many of which are quite unmistakable in their look, origin, and meaning. Interestingly, it would appear that these posters are somewhat based on real-world events, more of which can be found explained below.

These posters represent the NCR’s ideals and heavily mask their sinister nature.

The posters seem to indicate how the depicted character (within said poster) is ‘your friend’, and ‘fights for your freedom’.

This is a direct reference to already existing World War 2 posters, many of which featured the same motifs, art styles, and text. In particular, these posters were circulated by the Allies during the height of World War 2 and were used to inform people of the progress and/or their allies.

This was quite the unforeseen discovery for Fallout: New Vegas fans, and only serves as a neat addition to the already expanding lore. Then again, the Fallout series has always been rooted in war, its consequences, and propaganda, so this isn’t exactly too surprising to see.

What is the NCR in Fallout: New Vegas?

Also known as the New California Republic, the NCR is a fictional, post-war federal republic set in the world of the Fallout series. It was founded in 2189 in New California and used to be composed of five separate states in the present day America.

The Republic was also a massive territory that extended into northern California, Oregon, Nevada, Mexico, and Arizona. Its capital was the Shady Sands, elected shortly after the establishment of its government.

While the NCR fights for the preservation of democracy, law, and personal liberty, it fails to evenly apply these principles to its citizens. Additionally, the NCR was noted to have dabbled in the expansion of its territories, often choosing to wage war against rivals.

Things got worse after the death of the second president, Tandi, and the NCR took a more aggressive approach. This drew heavy criticism from its citizens, with many accusing its officials of corruption and militarism.

After many years, though, the NCR ultimately faced its downfall and dwindled to a fraction of what it used to be. Shady Sands was destroyed in a nuclear wipeout, and the entire existence of the republic still remains uncertain.
