Harvey photographer Rob Gaff snaps stunning solar storm shots as an aurora lights up South West skies

A local photographer has snapped some stunning solar storm shots.

Harvey photographer Rob Gaff headed out last weekend to photograph the aurora as it lit up skies across the South West.

He said the chase started off like most of his previous aurora adventures — by ignoring the mountain of jobs at home to head out into the country.

Mr Gaff said he was influenced by the experts on social media who said an aurora event was coming in hot.

“I was able to get my gear all set and supplies organised for the night and head off before the sun had even set,” he said.

“I wasn’t sure where I was going but I knew I wanted to start my exploration somewhere out east from Collie.”

Mr Gaff said he drove for an hour until finding a quiet gravel road outside Williams.

in the direction of the aurora,” he said.

“There’s nothing more exciting as an aurora hunter then seeing your camera screen light up when you turn it on.”

Mr Gaff said he took a few shots along the road and was happy and prepared to head home.

“The night still had more surprises in store for me though,” he said.

Mr Gaff headed to a few more sports on his drive, shooting on for the next few hours watching the southern lights slowly fade into the stars.

“When it’s like this, I enjoy really taking my time to find some cool compositions and make the most of the unique night sky conditions. After a few more hours of exploring the clouds started to roll in from the impending front that had been forecast,” he said.

“As I made my way home I was full of gratitude to be able to do what I do — to explore WA and enjoy the everchanging night sky and the joy it brings me to be able share what I’ve captured with others.”
