One of these projects is Elden Ring Nightreign, and the studio once again takes an ambitious leap into a roguelike live-service game. And as you’d expect, it works. Nightreign hasn’t even been out for a week, and it’s sold millions of copies. But unfortunately for us, FromSoft decided to also bring all the negative aspects of its games to this new project. After having these problems in every game from Dark Souls to Elden Ring, could this be where the studio finally realizes? Elden Ring Nightreign shows us exactly what FromSoft does wrong every time FromSoftware has never been known for polish in the technical sense. Games like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and even Elden Ring have suffered from everything from unstable frame rates to notoriously bad netcode. And unfortunately for us, that trend doesn’t stop at Nightreign. In fact, the latest game from the studio has new issues because of its live service nature. Matchmaking is slow to the point of dysfunction, with some players reporting hours-long waits just to find two other players. That’s despite the game having hundreds of thousands of active players online at any given time. Luckily, the studio just updated the game’s solo mode to make it more balanced. And if we take a look outside of multiplayer, performance issues have followed FromSoftware across console generations. Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, which came out last year, was heavily criticized for performance issues on launch. And while FromSoft has updated it since, the DLC still hasn’t been completely optimized. Fortunately, we haven’t gotten reports of performance issues from Elden Ring Nightreign yet. It might have to do with the considerably smaller scale and nature of the game. But when FromSoft releases its next big title, we hope the game is actually optimized. You can’t ignore issues like this just because they repeatedly happen This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up Part of FromSoftware’s charm is its stubborn commitment to its vision, but that also means PC ports continue to feel second-class. Complaints about mouse-and-keyboard input date back to Dark Souls and have remained even as recently as Elden Ring. In fact, they’ve gotten worse. Menus are still mapped awkwardly, keybinding is unintuitive, and there are new problems arising from the fact that characters have new abilities and ultimates. For the longest time, the argument to this has been the fact that FromSoftware games are simply “designed for controllers.” But as many point out, what is even the point of porting a game to PC if you’re going to put no thought into designing the simplest things for mouse and keyboard? Despite all this, Nightreign might ultimately be good for FromSoftware. The problems are all here, and they are more visible than ever. But will that prompt a change? We hope so. But if the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds was any indication, gamers don’t vote with their wallets.
