CDPR’s Take on The Witcher 4 Tech Demo Hints at Even ******* Things to Come

When CD Projekt Red took the stage at the recent State of Unreal presentation, we expected some screenshots and short videos of The Witcher 4 that showed us the world and Unreal Engine 5’s capabilities. But we got much more than that. CDPR brought an entire gameplay tech showcase and showed us exactly how the game could look.

But the devs have not hesitated in emphasizing that the showcase isn’t actually the game itself. It shows us what The Witcher 4 could look like, and the technology behind it, but not the game itself. But what does that even mean? Does it mean the game itself is going to look even better?

The recent presentation for The Witcher 4 looked amazing, but what does CDPR mean by this?

The demo shown during the Unreal Engine showcase was not The Witcher 4 itself but a technological showcase created in the same world. CDPR made this very clear after the event in a statement to

. The studio clarified that the footage was supposed to show us the tools powering The Witcher 4, rather than a gameplay showcase.

This is a tech demo, and a first look at the cutting-edge technology powering The Witcher 4 – but not The Witcher 4 itself.

Still, the footage was undeniably impressive. It featured highly detailed environments, intricate NPC behavior, and all the visual features you’d expect from an Unreal Engine 5 game. As Game Director Sebastian Kalemba explained on

, it was more about the power behind the game than the game itself.

But the focus of this tech demo is just that — tech — and we were proud to show it live on stage, running at 60 frames per second on a PlayStation 5. The tools highlighted won’t just power The Witcher 4, but will also be shared with the wider video game development community through Unreal Engine 5. The tech we’re creating with Epic will benefit the entire industry, ultimately bringing a better experience to players.

The entire presentation was to show off Unreal Engine 5, which is doing some heavy lifting behind the scenes. The showcase gave us a look at the technology that CDPR is using to make the game. Nanite Foliage, Fast Geometry Streaming, ML Deformer, Smart Objects, and more.

UE5 doesn’t have the best track record in recent history, but if there’s any studio that learns from mistakes, it’s CDPR. “We at CD Projekt Red are collaborating with Epic Games to push open-world game design further than ever before,” Kalemba noted. And we believe him.

The world of The Witcher 4 will be so interesting

While much of the focus was on technology, the demo also reminded fans why they fell in love with The Witcher in the first place: worldbuilding. In the showcase, we are introduced to the port town of Valdrest. And despite the fact that all we know about the place is what we can see from Ciri’s walk through the town, there’s so much cultural context that we can see.

From armor that looks like it was inspired by Slavic history, to a market that shows us different classes of people in terms of consumers and suppliers. And that’s the kind of detail that we can expect from CDPR. Hell, there might even be some convoluted questline waiting for us there when we visit it in the game for real.

Despite this new look at what the game could be, we have no information about its release. For now, we need to keep believing in CDPR, considering the fact that the new showcase was done on a base PS5, we can probably expect the game to come out within this console generation.

What are you looking forward to the most in The Witcher 4? Let us know your thoughts!
