Elden Ring Nightreign’s death penalty might be harsher than any previous FromSoftware title. Each death results in loss of runes as well as loss of a level, back to level 1, which stings if you’re already on the verge of reaching the max level of 15.

It wouldn’t be a FromSoftware game if there weren’t a way to counter the shortcomings in their titles, and such is the case with the death penalty in Elden Ring Nightreign. There is an item that will come in handy for those who often come face to face with death.

The Cord End leads to a hidden location that’s bound to be a looker for Nightfarers out exploring the dangers of Limveld.

What does the Cord End do in Elden Ring Nightreign?

Start praying to the RNG gods as the drop rate for Cord End in Elden Ring Nightreign is extremely rare since it’s a legendary item. The purpose of the Cord End is to unlock a hidden door located in the river north of the central Castle of Limveld.

Only approach the hidden door if you’ve come across a Cord End during your expedition; otherwise, trying to open the stone door without the item will result in a message stating that the door “Only opens for those who wield merit“.

Inside the hidden door lies the reward, which is 3x Sacrificial Twigs, another item that makes a comeback from Elden Ring. These items were found in the regions of the Atlus Plateau and Crumbling Farum Azula in the original title, and they were hard to come by as well.

A user named Byf60V X came across the secret stone door on the north side of the Central Castle and discovered the use for the Cord End:

These Sacrificial Twigs prevent you from losing all your runes and a level when you die, offering much-needed safety from the death penalty in Elden Ring Nightreign. They take up your Talisman slots but are lost with use, unlike Talismans.

If you’re a three-man team, let your mates have each of the Sacrificial Twigs to spread out the danger of dying and losing on your levels throughout three runs. Word of advice, though, if you find yourself short on time to reach the hidden door when you’ve found the Cord End, you’re better off without it.

The Sacrificial Twigs are only useful when you’re still on day one. As you progress, you obtain better and stronger items, like the boluses. However, if you still have the Cord End at the end of day two or the beginning of day three, replace it with something more useful.

Since the Cord End is a rare drop, it will be hard to come by on your expeditions in Limveld. This legendary item has a slim chance to spawn in item crates in Churches, which adds to the list of reasons for visiting the Churches in Elden Ring Nightreign.

The altar at these Churches also provides additional Sacred Flasks to ramp up your healing game, which makes it a worthy Landmark to visit in Limveld. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll find the Cord End lying around.

Although a trip to the Churches is always worth it, the journey to find the hidden stone door may not be, depending on which day you’re in and how much time you have left. If it’s too late, abandon ship and head to Landmarks with more valuable items.
