WA Planning Commission called on Albany locals to inform Emu Point Precinct Structure Plan

The future of one of Albany’s most iconic coastal areas could be in for a makeover as the WA Planning Commission calls on locals for input to guide the precinct’s future development.

The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage and City of Albany released three surveys on May 29, allowing residents to offer their thoughts on what should be included in the Emu Point precinct structure plan.

Covering the Emu Point, Collingwood Heights and Collingwood Park area respectively, the surveys form the first step in what the DPLH website indicates to be a year-long process.

Each survey asks for the areas’ unique characteristics, the key issues it faces, the ideal housing types, the preferred services and amenities, how often they utilise the reserves and beaches, and the quality of the transport network.

City of Albany mayor Greg Stocks said Emu Point is a hub for tourism, recreation as well as a growing area of housing and employment.

“The City is committed to supporting sustainable growth that enhances these roles while protecting the area’s unique character and environmental values,” he said.

“The current community engagement processes are a valuable opportunity for the community to help shape a long-term vision for Emu Point.

“The community can have their say by completing the online surveys and attending a community pop-up.”

The proposed EPPSP boundary encompasses 560ha of land from Warangoo Road-Oyster Heights to the north, along Lower-King Road to Lake Seppings in the west, and the coastline to the south and east.

The area is currently zoned for a mix of rural, residential, tourism, recreation, community, aquaculture and marine-related land uses.

Four community pop-up sessions are set to be held on June 26-28 and engagement for the surveys closes on July 9.

A draft structure plan will be prepared by mid-late 2025 which, after an advertising and public comment *******, will be officially determined by the WAPC in late 2025 to mid 2026.
