Saginaw man dies after being hit by vehicle in Petoskey Walmart parking lot

PETOSKEY — The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal incident that occurred on Sunday, June 1 at the Walmart in Petoskey.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in the Walmart parking lot at around noon on Sunday.

The pedestrian was identified as Donald Paul Mitas, 83, of Saginaw.

After he was struck, Mitas was transported to McLaren Northern Michigan hospital for treatment. He died on Monday, June 2.

A 24-year-old woman from Alanson was the driver of the vehicle. She was uninjured in the incident.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing, but drugs or alcohol are not believed to have been a factor, according to a press release from the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the Mitas family during this difficult time,” Sheriff Matt Leirstein said in the release.
