One Fromsoft Revelation Might Explain Why Elden Ring Nightreign Is Yet to Polish Its Roguelike Elements

FromSoft is famous for its Soulsborne games, which shouldn’t stop them from exploring more. With Elden Ring Nightreign, Junya Ishizaki did what must be done to keep things familiar yet different. While introducing roguelike features to the Elden Ring IP does fulfill the vision, it seems like winning all fans over is still a long shot away.

But did you know Elden Ring Nightreign wasn’t built with the roguelike genre in mind? It might come as a surprise, but Junya Ishizaki himself admitted that the roguelike idea wasn’t approached during the initial phase of development; it’s something that happened naturally. This might be the reason why avid fans of the roguelike genre feel a tad disappointed.

Fans find Elden Ring Nightreign‘s roguelike approach to be flawed

Elden Ring Nightreign might be facing some criticism, but most of the fanbase still sees the game in a positive light. However, long-term Soulsborne fans might find the game mechanics to be divergent from the old formula, as it has its own identity. But just because it has a different identity, should it be praised regardless? Not quite.

On r/nightreign, many have taken the opportunity to voice their concerns with the newest release. Most of the criticism is constructive, and players only wish for a better experience. User Cynical_onlooker put together all the issues they had with the roguelike elements in the title.

The foremost issue is with the passive bonuses that almost feel negligible. Not that it has to make the characters invincible, but in Elden Ring Nightreign‘s current state, it does seem to give noticeable results. Usually in roguelikes, passive abilities can change the playstyle completely, and that being missing from Nightreign is a bummer.

Additionally, roguelikes never feel boring after multiple runs, as each one feels unique. Since there is not much variance in map switching, it quickly turns repetitive. FromSoft may encourage players to develop their own optimized routes for completion, but it takes away the fun. If there were more variance in the map shifts, then it would have been better.

With a lack of progression and repetitive nature, Elden Ring Nightreign sadly limits players rather than unleashing creativity. All the roguelike magic it is missing can be blamed on the rushed implementation of the genre. You might want to sit down for this revelation.

Elden Ring Nightreign wasn’t initially a roguelike title to begin with

recently. In that he specifically stated, “we didn’t start off by saying ‘let’s aim to build a roguelike’ or something.” That idea was only approached as the development of Elden Ring Nightreign went on.

It’s not necessarily a jumping off point for the game design, is what I’m trying to say. It was more the result of a lot of feeling out the gameplay and the structure, and figuring out what the best solution to a certain problem was or what made sense in terms of where that particular gameplay element was headed at the time.

All Ishizaki wanted with the title was to change the game design and set it apart from the Elden Ring IP. While most of Ishizaki’s team is familiar with the genre, he didn’t want to take a traditional roguelike route but rather “branch out” their gameplay ideas.

With a lot of shifts in ideas, Elden Ring Nightreign was made in a way that doesn’t resemble any particular genre. Some fans will call it a roguelike, while others will keep calling it a soulslike. However, no one is wrong here, as the game has been built in that manner. So instead of nitpicking everything, how about enjoying it as a unique experience?

Do you like Elden Ring Nightreign as it is, or do you wish it to be more true to the roguelike genre? What elements would you like to see changed in the game for a better experience?
