First Look at ‘The Witcher 4’ PS5 Gameplay at 60 FPS

The Witcher 4 is CD Projekt Red’s upcoming single-player, narrative-focused RPG. The title is knee deep in development, and features Ciri as its protagonist in a brand new setting, taking on the role of a female Witcher.

Interestingly enough, the game is built on top of Unreal Engine 5, not on CD Projekt Red’s previously used, in-house Red Engine. This allows for a greater level of visual fidelity, and the team is keen on delivering its vision to the players. To this extent, the team recently unveiled a tech demo of sorts, which is claimed to be running on the base PS5.

The Witcher 4 tech demo showcased on the base PlayStation 5

The Witcher 4 received a 15-minute-long tech demo at the State of Unreal – today, June 3, 2025. The demo showed off the usual bells and whistles of modern UE tech, but a big focus (at least this time around) seems to be on optimizations.

The footage is noted to be running on a standard, base PlayStation 5 at 60 frames per second – all while remaining visually vibrant and not eroding upon the look and feel established by The Witcher 3.

The team showcased much of the tech, including a segment which was centered around horse animations, which are expected to feel and control in a more realistic manner this time around.

Again, it cannot be emphasized enough how breathtakingly beautiful the world of The Witcher 4 looks. The demo features lush green vegetation, picturesque mountains and a city teeming with its very busy inhabitants – all of which seems to be rendered without any upscaling artifacts (at least of the severely noticeable variety).

Another aspect that seems to have been improved this time is the game’s animation work and NPC interactions. NPCs feel much more alive and can be seen dynamically reacting to the player.

Individual items and character animations appear to blend together to create a cohesive, realistic experience.

Even more impressive is that this footage was captured using a PS5, not the PS5 Pro, just the regular PS5. While we don’t know the image’s actual render resolution, it still looks fantastic.

How well CD Projekt Red’s claims will hold up this time remains to be seen

This wouldn’t be the first time CD Projekt Red has promised us the moon. Cyberpunk 2077 comes to mind, and its launch was abysmal. The game was plagued with bugs, visual artifacts, and was considered to be generally unfinished.

While CDPR has mostly ‘completed’ Cyberpunk 2077, it still serves as a cautionary tale of how even the best of us can fall. As such, it might be a good idea to take The Witcher 4’s presentation as it really is – a glorified tech demo.

While the upgraded Unreal Engine is by no means a slouch, this snippet does not represent actual gameplay and/or real-world performance. For all we know, The Witcher 4 could run a lot differently on its retail release.
