Should You Give Up an Arm in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon?

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon can be best described as an open-world RPG with a great emphasis on combat and exploration. The game can also be held akin to the recently released Oblivion Remastered, except with an even greater emphasis on combat.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon also finds new ways to innovate and surprise the player, and a rather peculiar interaction can result in the removal of a limb from the player character. While it is a rather unique mechanic, it does come with a series of pitfalls that you must first keep in mind.

How to lose an arm in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon

The only known way to lose your arm in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is by interacting with a Croakmaw. Simply walk up to one and press the requisite button that pops up beside ‘****’. The Croakmaw can be found in the second region of the game.

Doing so will cause the Croakmaw to chew up your entire arm and will leave you permanently limbless for the remainder of the game. In short, this change is permanent, and there is no way to restore and/or grow back your arm (despite Avalon being set in a mystical world of magical creatures and elements).

This is quite the hilarious little addition, and can be best compared to the eye surgery act within Baldur’s Gate 3, which is an equally pointless, but game-changing endeavor. Small additions like these make RPGs all the more enjoyable, while boosting their replayability.

Interestingly, losing an arm will also unlock a corresponding achievement, so it’s not an entirely fruitless endeavour.

While certainly intriguing, it is most certainly not worth doing

The gimmick of running around with one arm wears off quickly. As expected, losing an entire arm brings with it more problems than anything, which is made even worse by the fact that the change is permanent.

There is currently no way to supplement yourself with a prosthetic and/or magical arm in the game’s current build. Given that this is associated with a particular achievement, it might prove to be difficult for the completionists out there to resist.

Thankfully, with the power of save scumming, it is possible to reverse these effects entirely. Simply reload a save before you **** the Croakmaw. This should restore you back to having both arms and the achievement unlocked.

Assuming you forgot to do a quick save or plan on continuing your one-handed journey, it might be best to reconsider. Having access to half of your upper limbs will severely restrict what you can do in the game.

For starters, you have a lot less build variety to choose from. To make matters worse, there is absolutely no way to dig using one hand, which means you will miss out on a lot of loot and mining activities.

This makes progressing through the game a fair bit more difficult, and as such should be avoided for most players.
