Squids Down, Bots Loading? Helldivers Believe They’re in for a Full Tour

The dust has barely settled from the recent 11-day defense of Super Earth, and Helldivers 2 players are already looking forward to what’s next. We never would’ve expected the Illuminate to invade Super Earth directly, but they did. And the question on our minds now is, if they could do it, then so can the bugs and bots.

Given the scale of the recent invasion, it’s unlikely that Arrowhead Game Studios has cooked up another large-scale event so early afterwards. It is a live service game after all, new content takes time, and now is the time to wait for what’s next.

Helldivers 2 players are already theorizing the next invasion of Super Earth

Arrowhead Studios officially announced the Illuminate retreat on May 30 and confirmed that the only two Mega Cities that survived were Prosperity City and Equality-on-Sea. Administrative Centre 02 was wiped off the map. Major cities like Eagleopolis and Port Mercy are gone, leaving much of Super Earth in ruins.

On the r/Helldivers subreddit, players have begun openly theorizing that either the Automatons or Terminids may attempt their own invasion of Super Earth. “Now that we have the tileset,” one user pointed out, “we can only assume that a bot/bug invasion of Super Earth is 100% possible.”

It’s not all doomscrolling and dread. The recent invasion was actually really fun as a game event. And some fans welcome a bot invasion, calling it a more “manageable” challenge compared to the swarming bugs. One player, while jokingly condemning tyranny, wrote they’d “gladly take a Bot invasion” over dealing with the Terminids. Others weren’t so optimistic.

The Illuminate have retreated from Super Earth battlespace. The Heart of Democracy has been defended. The Battle of Super Earth is won.

User SentientGopro115935 speculated that just as the Illuminate had Meridia and the Terminids have Gloom, the Automatons must also possess a secret ace. “Maybe there’s something going on over on Cyberstan?” they suggested. But aside from all the speculation, it’s unlikely that we get a new content update soon.

But here’s where excitement meets reality. After delivering a cinematic and worldwide event like the Battle for Super Earth, Arrowhead is most likely on a logistical cooldown. With only about 140 employees, most of whom aren’t directly involved in content creation, the team simply doesn’t have the scale of a typical AAA live-service studio. So as much as we want the next big thing, we’ll have to wait.

Helldivers 2 has gone through its own share of ups and downs in the last year, and the player-developer relationship is in a good spot right now. The Heart of Democracy update alone boosted player numbers by a large margin, proving that even amid criticism, the community’s passion remains strong. So we’re sure whatever Arrowhead is cooking up will be good.

So the question is not if another invasion is coming, but when. For now, we’ll probably just go back to spreading Managed Democracy on planets full of bugs and bots. But recent events have proven that we could be fighting these enemies on our own soil one day.
