Its Not Just You, Elden Ring Nightreign’s Frantic Pace Even Concerned the Devs at FromSoftware

After dying a million times in Elden Ring, FromSoftware is back with Elden Ring Nightreign, where if you stay still even for more than a minute, then congratulations, you just cost your three-party team the entire match and set them back almost 45 minutes.

Elden Ring Nightreign has taken over the world with its badass characters and even more badass bosses. But while most of the aspects in the game are exactly like the 2022 GOTY title, what FromSoftware truly changed in their game was the pacing.

Nightreign is the fastest-paced game in the entire Soulsborne genre, and even the devs were kind of worried about that. Let’s delve deeper into this and find out more.

Elden Ring Nightreign is setting the internet ablaze

Elden Ring Nightreign is a roguelike action role-playing game that came out just a few days ago. The game takes place in an alternate past of Elden Ring’s setting and features a three-player multiplayer mode where, every in-game day, you and your team have to gather resources during the day and kill bosses at night.

The game takes place in the procedurally generated version of Limgrave, which is known as Limveld, and in the course of three days, players have to prepare for the Nightlords. And, in hoping to beat the big boss at the end of each day, you and your team have to constantly look for better items and kill smaller foes for loot.

Although the game was intended to be this fast-paced, this is a huge turnaround for FromSoftware, who are especially known for making games that take their sweet sweet time. This quick structure even made the developers’ hearts a little twinge.

In a recent interview with

, the director of Elden Ring Nightreign, Junya Ishizaki, gave some insight on how there were concerns about players not expecting the same pace as they played Elden Ring. He added that this was their main friction as developers.

There were, of course, some concerns about not necessarily being able to play slow like previous titles, like Elden Ring, and take your time and really take in everything that was going on, So that was a main fork in the road and a potential point of friction for ourselves as developers and players. But that’s a case that we believed in, and we believe that that was the direction for this title in particular. So we wanted to create something new with that.

Ishizaki also added that it was a good opportunity to create something new and also gave the developers a fresh start and a brand new challenge.

Players will adapt to the game’s pacing

In the end, Elden Ring Nightreign did not follow the stereotype of every other Soulsborne game and decided to both surprise and challenge its long-standing player base. FromSoftware, which is celebrated for its deliberate pacing and atmospheric tension, chose to push its boundaries and deliver a game that thrives on speed, time pressure, and cooperation.

As Ishizaki acknowledged that this development in the game might make a lot of fans disoriented, especially those who valued the introspective exploration and calculated combat of Elden Ring. But this faster and more aggressive version of the world offers the players something new.

The pacing and intensity of the game might feel unfamiliar at first, but it is not something that we cannot adapt to. This discomfort and unease are part of the experience, and it is also a sign that FromSoftware is evolving. Elden Ring Nightreign doesn’t just expand the lore of the Lands Between, but it also redefines how players survive within it.
