Unlike most of the “super” beings who have powers beyond human comprehension, Batman is just a guy in a bulletproof suit, with enough time and money in his hands to rid the world of criminals. He has become so influential that every teenager and ’90s kid wants to deliver justice by donning a batsuit. While this might not be possible in the real world, games can certainly provide a realm for people to become the Caped Crusader himself. But when OG Batman fans hoped for a game back in 2008, it got cancelled and was even forgotten soon after. Let’s delve deeper into this and find out what happened to it. Batman: The Dark Knight game fumbled really hard Batman: The Dark Knight was supposed to be an action-stealth game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It was being developed by Pandemic Studios from September 2006 until it was cancelled in October 2008. The game was supposed to be a direct offshoot of The Dark Knight movie, which was directed by Christopher Nolan. The game was going to be a sequel to the 2005 game, Batman Begins, which was released for the sixth generation consoles and was also based on the Christopher Nolan movie of the same name. The title would have been the first open-world video game to feature the Dark Knight, even preceding the Arkham games. Batman: The Dark Knight was supposed to follow the film, with the developers having access to the script, materials, and even the actors would have reprised their roles for the game. But the game got stalled because Pandemic created a new gaming engine called Odin and decided to transfer assets to the newer engine for open-world and newer mechanics. After the transfer was completed, the game caused unforeseen technical problems, with frame rates dropping to five FPS, and the issue increased when Batman and other characters were also transferred. Later, EA, the publisher of the game, chose to cancel the entire project as it could not have reached its December 2008 deadline. EA reportedly lost a whopping $100 million for not releasing the game, and later, they did not even renew the license for the IP. The IP was reverted back to Warner Bros, who went on to release one of the greatest franchises of all time, the Batman: Arkham series. Pictures The cancellation of Batman: The Dark Knight game wasn’t just a title that was scrapped; it was a real letdown for fans who wanted to step into the shoes of Nolan’s version of the Caped Crusader. The development studio had everything at its disposal, from the script to the cast. But instead of making one of the greatest Batman games of all time, it fell apart trying to push technical boundaries. The pandemic ended up in a technical mess that couldn’t have been salvaged in time, and they ended up pulling the plug on the whole project. With that, the chances of entering Nolan’s universe also went away. But like how all bad things happen for a reason, the cancellation of this game also gave birth to our favourite video game franchise, the Batman: Arkham series. It just proves that things fall apart, just so something greater could take their place.
